As you may know, the war with Mexico ended in 1848... The U.S. had occupied all of California (including Baja) and decided to return the peninsula to
Mexico. This map shows what was Mexico after Texas broke away as an independent republic and before the U.S. gained the land from Texas to the
Pacific.
The peninsula is called 'Old California' (Antigua California) and the vast area north of it is called Upper or New California (Alta o Nueva
