anyone had any problems carrying on fishing reels in TJ?
how about being charged for a fishing rod tube?

I had a reel in my carry on and they made me check it. I didn't ask why but I understand that you can carry one on if it isn't spooled, haven't tried
it, just what I heard. I checked a rod tube with another checked bag, no extra charge as long as the total weight is 33lbs or less. You can pay for
more weight but you need to do it on line when you buy your ticket or it is pricey at the counter.

We had the same experience in October. We had two reels spooled with spectra that they didn't allow as a carry-on. The guys sent us back to check
the bag (or remove the line).
