Help get Jose his cataract surgery

fudgypup - 4-25-2012 at 10:30 AM

I could use some of your help. You can see the background here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=784810

Basically, Jose is in need of cataract surgery and I was able to get a medical missions team, SEE International, to agree to help him. They're in Tecate on May 19th, as well as every month except for July and August.

Jose runs that drink shack on Diablo Dry Lake (salada) outside (nw) of San Felipe. I need someone who speaks spanish to contact him, someone who might be passing through, to get him this information. Stuff like does he want the operation, can he get a ride to and from Tecate or does he need our help, etc...

Please send me a message if you can help. My only other option is to have my better spanish speaking friend translate a letter I'll mail him. I can only assume I'd mail it to:

Sr. Jose Baltierra

near San Felipe, B.C. Mexico

Muchas gracias, amigos

Got a follow up on this story...

I'm headed down tomorrow to see Jose again and tell him the good news; that he can get his cataract surgery at no cost!

If you have any friends, neighbors with eye maladies (pediatric strabismus, cataracts, etc...) please tell them about this free clinic in Tecate the third Saturday of each month at Tecate Dif.

I drafted this letter in Spanish to leave behind with him, in case my poor Spanish isn't fully understood:

Atentamente,

Seguro Popular to the rescue...

EnsenadaDr - 6-7-2012 at 02:50 PM

Just so you good folks know, Seguro Popular refers all patients that need ophtalmic surgery (cataracts, estrabismo, pterigion (carnosidades), and glaucoma to opthalmologists (or oftalmologos, in Spanish. If you have any of those problems, go see your medico general at your local Seguro clinic, and they have the authorization to send you to an eye specialist free of charge (except for in Santa Rosalia from what I hear..what's up with that??)

You might want to inquire and see if they implant a corrective lens after removing the defective original. This is mighty important, and might keep everyone happy if they understand what is happening (My cataract surgery happened February).

Thanks for all the help with translation (Baja Blanca) and great news about Seguro Popular.

I went down there on Saturday (June 9th) and it seemed no one was there :(

I saw the dogs and called out for Jose but it seemed either he was preoccupied or may have been off to the store to get something.

I left a copy of that letter, so hopefully he gets it and knows he can get the surgery he's in need of.

Got a little video on the way back across the late too:

Had a great time down there (again). Went up through Laguna Hanson down to just north of Hwy 3 before going back up into the hills in an easterly direction then down to Heroes de la Independencia. Stayed at Mike's Sky Rancho. Saturday was out to the dry lake (to see Jose) and back because my buddies wanted to keep to the cooler temps on the west coast. Went down to shipwreck then back up to Erendira and stayed at Coyote Cal's. REALLY good dinner there. Was supposed to ride another day but my buddies pussed out and wanted to go home Sunday. Went up through Ensenada (hate that traffic) and had lunch in Ojos Negros before heading back up the Compadre trail to Tecate.

FYI for you all.
Jose has had his cataract surgery. Im not sure if he has both eyes done yet but I do know he has had one done. He was so thrilled to see his dogs & see he had so many chickens when he returned home. It was an exciting day for him.
The people here in San Felipe, a group called BetterTogeher helped him get his surgery I believe it was done in Ensenada. I will check with our group here & see how he is doing & if he has had the second one now too?I will try to get back with more tomorrow or later today.

Wonderful news!

These are always such great stories! Thank you to all nomads that make these stories turn out so positive. We know bad stuff will always happen to people, but those who have the nomads on thier side are really fortunate. Congratulations to Jose!

More news on Jose--he has had both eyes done now & is back home & still excited he can see so well. He is now doing very well. BetterTogether has taken a least seven people from San Felipe to get eyes fixed and they are looking to do nine more come fall. This is all done by volunteers to get them to Ensenda see they have a place to stay ,food & drinks each mealtime. On their return here there are two retired nurses (plus spouses & other members of BT)that oversee their care to see no problems after and that they have good home care til all is well.
