buying car in BCS

Does anyone have a mexican plated car in BCS? if you do, what do you do for insurance? I am looking at a vehicle that is legally imported here. Anything I NEED to know?

here, one can get a BCS driver's license with just a tourist visa. Actually I dont believe insurance is required...very very few people here have auto insurance. I got mine from Banamex and it was pretty cheap and easy to do at the bank.

Insurance is not required for sure. Moreover, in small towns Baja registration is hardly required. I saw Baja fishermen and farmers driving US plated pickups with plates faded in sun and expired decades ago. Don't know whether it was "legally" imported at all - my understanding is that us gringos just leave it to locals, as a barter or whatever.

Leaving your car to someone in Baja is illegal as well, Although I have never known anyone to get in trouble for t.

Unregistered cars don't frequent "big" towns, except for grocery purchases once a month - let's say, as big as Mulege ... Wouldn't be a good idea driving unregistered for a gringo.

For a local it's different. If local wants to take it off your hands, doesn't plan on going north in this car ever, and you don't want to drive that clunker few thousands miles back home, the local probably takes more risk than you. If there is any risk in this situation at all...

Most of those plated cars have one of three things. First, they can get a permit from the local pueblo or ejido and those are usually sold on a monthly basis. You will see the sticker in the windshield if you look carefully.
Second, the most common permit is from ONAPAFFA and is a permit to use the car while the owner is in the process of importing. Most are done on a yearly basis.
Third, is Annapromex, which is pretty much the same thing as ONAPAFFA but is done by a different orginization.

the locals get american plated cars and cannot import so they use the political protest associations like annapromex and onapaffa to temp register them

It was my interpretation that non-citizens were not allowed to leave their property here? One of the first questions I got when attaining immigrado status was "what are you going to do with your car?It should be imported"... but what do I know... So you say we can leave our US plated car to a Mexican without a problem

if an american gives or sells a california plated car to a mexican and files a release of liability with the dmv in california, could there be negative consequences to the american if the car is involved in an accident in mexico at a later date?

Yeah, Onapaffa... Govt don't like it, but it works. Costs next to nothing, but it's only good for 5 years.
