URGENT-Attention Bank of America-Santander ATM card holders!!!

Hook - 5-6-2012 at 12:21 PM

There is a potentially HUGE fraud breaking out for customers using these ATM cards. It's possible that the fraud is only affecting persons living in Mazatlan, Sinaloa but there are also indications that a server in Culiacan has been compromised and it could affect customers outside of Mazatlan. Because Mazatlan has such an active expat community and message boards, it may be that they are the first "squeaky wheel" on this spate of incidents.

It still could be that this is localized to the Mazatlan area.

But, just to be safe, you should check your accounts and see if there are any charges that were not made by you. There have been charges initiated all over Mexico as well as cities in South America.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Well, it isnt one post. It was one person who mentioned their account being compromised and then suddenly there were about 10 with multiple incidents and then someone mentioned that there was a news article a couple days before about an inside job being done on the server in Culiacan.

Sorry, I'm not willing to cut and paste all the posts. You'll just have to trust me.

Or not, and dont check your accounts, I guess. :?:

This is the initial report (in English) on May 1st quoted in the forum discussions:
http://mazmessenger.com/2012/05/01/cloned-debit-cards-hit-ba...

It quotes a story in the Noroeste paper as the source. Here's an earlier report from debate.com.mx (autotranslated).

Another forum discussion:

So it seems to be a localised to Sinoala (but still large) problem, and mainly concerning withdrawals that took place last weekend (end of April).

A later article (in Spanish) said Santander was agreeing to refund the amounts within 48 hours, rather than in a week or two as they initially tried to get away with ...
