Boarder Crossing????

Since I live in north San Diego County, the five is an easy shot to T.J. for a boarder crossing, however I was reading a guide that kept referring to an easier crossing at Tecate is so much quicker that the 90 mile drive to the east is worth it.

As we live very close to the border, going south, we cross at the San Ysidro/Tijuana crossing and it is just fine. We usually cross around 7 am with no traffic at all. If it is 8am or a little later, there is some traffic, but not a problem.

Coming back from Baja, we head for Tecate and use that crossing --- much easier and a much calmer crossing back into the US.

Diana has it right, Fishmagician.

From your starting point, cross southbound at San Ysidro/Tijuana...and coming back northbound head up Hwy 3 from Ensenada to Tecate...much less hassle.

Are you talking 90 miles extra?

Not sure about your math.
Assuming you depart from Ensenada to downtown San Diego the Tecate route is likely 35 -40 miles further, and much slower going from the border up to SD

But not an additional 90 miles....

Downtown San Diego to Tecate following Campo Road is just shy of 40 miles...and the time to travel is about 50 minutes...unless you are tempting speeding tickets.

There usually is a CHO officer parked at the bottom of the hill, across the street of the restaurant (lurking in the shadows of a large tree) in Dulzura.

That stretch of road has more accidents than anywhere in San Diego Co. the Bycicles,Motorcycles,Trucks, Tourist, and people from S.O.B. dont make for the ideal mix. However I perfer it over any other route.:yes::yes:

I used to live on 94 in Jamul and, by far, the worst drivers with most wrecks are the Border Patrol. They drive like maniacs and just don't seem to care how much damage they cause.

The only reason I have to go up there is for Dr. and Mail. Dee was a long time resident of East County and has family there. I have Kaiser medical so i changed every thing to East County so there is no real need to go to San Diego. Tecate is the best way for me.

Ensenada to the Tecate Border is nearly the same distance as to the Tijuana Border.... about 70 miles.

The addition is the distance from Tecate to San Diego on Hwy. 94... and that hour drive is a whole lot better than waiting for an extra hour+ in line at Tijuana or Otay, over the wait at Tecate.

Crossing north at Tecate last weekend still took about 3 hours for me, but I think in general its faster, as long as you are traveling back on a weekday. The drive from Ensenada to Tecate is really nice too. When you get into Tecate, they have "Border Crossing" signs to guide you into the line which makes it easier for your first time.
