Best Way to Travel from TJ to Merida - Fly or by Bus?

Gypsy Jan - 5-10-2012 at 11:21 AM

And how do I research the costs?

Merida Yucatan is a long ways from TJ, it is approx.
$150 US from TJ to La Paz by bus, this is a guess but to bus
TJ/Merida would be $400+ maybe $500. The only
way I would consider bussing was if I wanted to
see some other parts of Mex along the way. The
longest bus ride I took in Mex was Mazatlan/TJ, 32 hrs.
Merida would be maybe 3 times that distance

Here is a site but it looks like you would have change buses.

i am sure there is an app for that!

fyi, that is one very long bus journey. would probably be cheaper and certainly quicker to fly.

I'd fly.

You'd be a bus-ketcase by the time you got there, if you took the bus.

Flying seems the way to go.

As was noted, the bus is only good if you have time and want to see a lot of roadside landscape.

I took the bus from TJ to Merida a long time ago. Was a great adventure - came back by bus too. I'd do it again. When I was in DF waiting at the bus terminal for my connecting route, a guy from Hertz asked if we wanted to ride with him in one of his rental cars he was returning to Villahermosa. We (I was with my kids who were about 7 and 8 at the time) went with him, along with a couple school kids from Ensenada who were returning home to Villahermosa. He had a big convertible and drove really fast! We stopped in the jungle for pineapple on the side of the road, had a nice dinner in the jungle somewhere, and when we got to Villahermosa it was 2 am and he put us on the right bus to Merida. But I was so tired when we were supposed to get off the bus, I didn't get off, and ended up in Chetumal at 6 am. Ha! Took another bus from there and got to Merida in a few hours. You meet a lot of people and experience an authentic slice of the country. The places where the buses stop for meals can be interesting too. One place was in the country where they were cooking chickens on BBQs. A plate of chicken, beans and corn was about $3. Served outside on picnic tables. Really fun.

If money isn't the issue, you might consider driving. My daughter and I did that trip two summers ago, taking the time to visit a bunch of archaeological sites in the process. It was a great trip.
