Vintage Camper Show in Pismo Beach

This past weekend was the annual vintage camper show in Pismo Beach. There were 310 participants this year. The work into some of these is amazing, they are so perfectly restored and maintained. They are open to the public so you can look inside and check them out and talk to the owners. I talked to a couple owners and evidently the most asked question is "does it have a bathroom", lol. Here's just a few photos I took. You'd get a lot of attention camping your way down Baja in one of these babies!

1) The 5th annual trailer show was at the PIsmo Dunes RV Park and not in Pismo Beach proper as the annual Hot rod and Classic car show every father' s day--which is coming up--generally 1500 entrants.

2) I recognized trailers from California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia and a few other states

3) Mrs Miller and I visited and toured Baja for about 20 years in a 1973 ,13 foot higly modified Roust A Bout..It began life looking much like these trailers, at the end of it's Baja life it appeared as if it had been designed and constructed in 1913- So many many modifications

4) The trailer was sold to a Lt in the SM police who is still using it off road on a regular basis

5) Pismo Beach is becoming very very populated with visitors from all over the world- SDM

Hey, we're neighbors, I'm in Grover! Try to go next year, it really is fun, and not too crowded.

I have attended all five years, every year it is bigger and better -more trailers, more matching tow vechicles, more in vintage costumes.

Since the first show I have befriended a number of the participants. All are very passionate about their trailers and displays and as a hobby many travel the US from vintage trailer show to vintage trailer show. With out exception they all agree that the Pismo Coast Village show is best show in the US and a great way to begin the show season.

And why shouldn't it be the biggest and best? Pismo is always sunny, in a Micro Climate..never too hot to too cold-over 75 is a heat wave, under 65 is artic weather. Pismo has one of the worlds best and cleanist beaches, a beach board walk, a fishing pier and great dinning, great views all Kodak moments...
Many I chatted with were excited to return for all of the above reasons plus the Quarter Deck has the May special..fish & chips for $3.00 +drink =$5.00 yankee dollars.

It is suggested you visit Pismo soon and often- but do not plan on moving here..property is sold by the square inch rather than by lots.

my first camper was an all wood teardrop, like the one behind the 1940 Ford woody. The first time it took my kids camping was to Kennedy Meadows in the eastern sierra. Ten miles of washboard upgrde from bottom to top. When we reached the top all the nails and screws had worked loose and the sides were flaping. Just abanded it up there. :lol::lol::lol:

That parking lot is about as rough road as that 1940 Ford & Tear Drop trailer will ever experience=These people work long and hard to locate their riggs and spend piles of money restoring them..

Then they travel the US showing them to the general public.

You must see them to appreciate them

we lived in grover (and Arroyo and Oceano) several years when Grover City had a beach, where one could drive where one wished, surf fish for perch and enjoy a cool one. Then the a%%holes on the Grover Council sold theirr right to the beach for a mess of porridge. Now they've renamed it "Grover Beach", but they don't have one. I went back a few years ago when my best bud was dying. I got as far as the guard house at the beach where they wanted 4.00 to get on the beach. I didn't pay it. I won't. so long. congrats to Pismo for keeping their little piece of beach.

That is a really rare one evidently. A little story behind that one too. They came from Seattle and on the way down the hitch broke and they managed to keep under control but did end up with some damage. They said they ran into some good Samaritans that welded it for them and they were on their way again.

I think some of you know that we lived in Los Olivos for 40 years, and we still have family and lots of friends in the area. We were there last weekend for our granddaughter's annual performances in the dance extravaganza at the Solvang Theaterfest theater.

We departed Sunday morning going north on 101 and encountered a number of these vintage trailers/cars going both directions. We knew nothing (or rather had forgotten) about the 'rally' at the Pismo.

Many of these ancient overland vehicles are real treasures and we love seeing them. I regret that during the brief time on Saturday morning that we had free we didn't make the short trek north so look them over once again.

There's an Airstream Bambi near us here in Idaho. It is for sale, however, the seller has restored it and is pretty proud of his restoration, so the price is right up there at the pinnacle of 'sale' prices for these little jewels. It's on my radar screen, but....??

Hi Allen, I just drove thru Los Olivos yesterday. Did you ever spot any of these when you lived there? I've never seen one there and was really excited that he landed in a tree and that I could snap a few photos.

Wish I'd been there with ya. Really liked the volkswagon/plymouth-type hybrid sorta car/camper thing on steroids.

Lotza style everywhere, and how you manage to find the nature shots-- a bald eagle? Wow!

Yes. Lake Cachuma is largely responsible for their return I believe. Several nesting areas. Once, years ago, I was out on the lake with Neal Taylor (when he worked at All American Sports in Santa Barbara before he was the Naturalist at Cachuma). and we saw a pair of bald eagles. He told me of the major reduction in their numbers but they had once been numerous along the Santa Ynez River. He thought at the time we were looking at that twosome (probably ~1966) that the lake might bring them back.

Then, in the early '90s I was with him again near the same point where we had seen the pair 25 years before and he was now the park's Naturalist. He was beside himself that there were now several nesting pairs of those magnificent birds.

Since the bald eagle's main diet is fish, we don't see them frequently in Los Olivos, so you were, indeed, fortunate I think.

A few years ago there were some ospreys present at the east (upstream) section of the lake. We didn't see the nests last week as we drove down San Marcos Pass. Hope they've only re-located.
