Packing for Baja! Leaving CO Thursday!!!

Marc - 5-25-2012 at 06:39 PM

Here in San Francisco we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. I can see the south (far) tower from my home.

IN MEMORY. My Uncle Ted Martîn. Killed on his 29th birthday during the battle of Guam, 1944.

IN MEMORY. The Battleship Iowa. I took this picture today just after it passed under the GG Bridge bound for it's final resting place in San Pedro. California.

5 day weekend. 2 bbq's to attend sun/mon.

pay respects on monday!

How do you barbecue a steak this time of year in Yuma?

Hold it out the window?

Isn't a bed of glowing coals a little mean to get next to, in late May?

Party until you can not take any more but lets not forget what made this holiday possible.

Maybe at least once this weekend, hold you c-cktail high and thank the veteran who gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free. Ignore politics and say a silent thank you.

Thank you, Casey and Willliam,

I honor persons on Memorial Day:

Those lost in the line of duty.

Those who stand up for the U.S.

Who are willing to fight to make the U.S. a stronger and better country.

BajaBlanca - 5-25-2012 at 08:50 PM

We will indeed offer up a toast to those gone before us, in the line of duty.

Bajalover - 5-26-2012 at 07:21 AM

Instead of enjoying the warmth of Borrego Springs, busy painting a Victorian Home in Napa,Ca. It's so cold at night here (50F) I have to turn on the heat pump on my Airstream with coffee in the morning. Hope to be done and continue my dreams of Baja and BBQ's soonest.
OH - do get some good wine here to soothe the Memorial Day Holiday.
Wish everyone a Great Holliday Week End.:tumble::yes::bounce:

DianaT - 5-26-2012 at 07:25 AM

Marc, that is a wonderful photo of the great bridge!

Let's see. Each day of this weekend we will wake up, look at each other and ask what is today? Once we settle on what day of the week it is, later we will figure out the date----need calendar or computer for this. This retirement thing has its problems.

We will think about friends, family and others who have served and given their lives for out country, and we will think about how we will celebrate when all of our troops are back home home, or at least out of war zones where they never belonged.

durrelllrobert - 5-26-2012 at 06:42 PM

Heading north to Canada early this year. Hope we don't hit snow in Montana.

bufeo - 5-26-2012 at 06:44 PM

Flyfishing my 'home' stream, then grill a couple of keepers.

Hopefully, you guys will have a nice trip...BTW, found your post on Thomas Edison very interesting...but I don't think being a GEEK is all its cracked up to be...they are socially maladapted and suffer in the long run.

My dad was an original China sailor, on shore leave off the Panay when the gunboat was attacked. He went to Subic Bay then on to the carrier Wasp. He had album upon album of large color photos of China. Two sea duties, two ships sunk. "Hey Pop! This Negro Leon's For You!!"

If I feel up to it I'll work a couple hours in the morning with a few gringos erecting a playground park for the kids of this village. Two more Sundays and it should be ready for them. Nice equipment = they say it cost Mexico 50K. All shiny and new but missing lots of parts.

Memorial Day

Gypsy Jan - 5-26-2012 at 07:17 PM

Friends in Honolulu are making sure that there is a flag and flowers on my uncle's grave there. He was a pilot and perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Friends in central California (Los Osos) are doing the same for my mother's grave. She was a WAAF corporal, stationed at the Santa Ana Army Air base during World War II.

I am attending a gathering at a home in Rosarito - RIBS ON THE BBQ!

My contribution to the BBQ is the "Family Favorite Potato Salad" (Shh, it's a secret family recipe, but if you want, I will post the info.)

Safe and Enjoyable Memorial Day wishes to all Nomads.

wessongroup - 5-26-2012 at 07:22 PM

All sounds great... enjoy .. and thanks to the many

EnsenadaDr - 5-26-2012 at 07:27 PM

My sister is treating me to a couple of games at Sycuan Casino in El Cajon....we always have a good time playing Bingo...!!!

bajadogs - 5-26-2012 at 10:20 PM

I will spill a Mexican beer and think of the origin of the holiday. I will re-read how ten thousand newly freed African-American slaves paid tribute to a couple hundred union soldiers who had died in a confederate prison camp. The prison had been a horse track prior to the war. In 1865, at the end of the war, "Colored men" properly buried the union soldiers and built a fence around the graves and erected an archway over the entrance which they painted "Martyrs of the Race Course".

I will think of the thousands of black children who laid flowers on those graves and I will wonder how far we've come... sipping Mexican beer.

Peace to all who sacrifice.

Bajaboy - 5-26-2012 at 10:31 PM

Unpack, wash clothes, and get ready for another trip to Baja in a few weeks. Life is good.

Our plan is to photograph our visitor from Holland right at the spot where this picture was taken. Hopefully there will be evening light to make the bridge glow. I'm hoping the crowds will allow such a photograph.

Also plan to show her the view from Twin Towers and maybe a cablecar ride down Hyde Street.

Regarding people to remember, there are 2.

1. Mom's brother was machine gunned by the germans during WWII. He was the youngest and beloved. Everyone tried to talk him out of joining but his sense of patriotism drove him on.

2. My dad's brother at the age of 14 stepped on a mine during the russian revolution, got gangrene, refused to have his leg amputated, and finally died. He was the first born.

tripledigitken - 5-27-2012 at 07:01 AM

A very good friend of ours invited us down to stay at their house for the weekend, while they are away. Very windy here last two days, same wind you folks in Baja have been getting. This morning dead calm and expected to be in the low 80's, life is good.

Remembering my parents who both loved being out here too, I toast to you..............

Enjoy your weekend wherever it may be.

Tripledigitken -
Love your photos. The cactus garden with foothills in the back are really nice. And the patio highlighted by the American Flag is great!
Looks like a fun place to spend a weekend.

I will be grilling kabobs on Monday, enjoying some nice Southern California weather.

Memorial weekend grilling fish...with some pollo.

Pompano - 5-27-2012 at 07:59 AM

At Lake Metigoshe, ND/Manitoba border, we will be grilling cold-water crappies just like these... along with some free-range chickens. While remembering & toasting the veterans of the USA armed services. This is a fitting place to be on this holiday...we are next to the International Peace Gardens..where Canada and USA signed a peace treaty...."to be friends as long as water flows and grass grows."

Whether we will be cooking & toasting under shelter is the question. Right now it's cool and drizzly...but that's Up North for you.

Macht nichts.. Hey, its all good!

..and better than Montana, where its now snowing! Just went thru Billings and Great Falls...today they have 5 inches of fresh snow..break out the cross-country skis...it's the Big Open..FLAT!

Am I the only one working all weekend! Darn! Oh well, have fun everyone, enjoy the holiday weekend!!
And I'm proud to be an American,

I don't want to hijack the point of this thread about Memorial Day, Bob..but following a custom of some nearby Plains Indians..the Chippewa Nation...I smudged my bbq fire and watching the smoke. it tells me that tomorrow's weather near your route from Mesquite to Edmonton will be warm precipitation in the form of Rain..not Snow. Furthermore the smoke says: Mostly cloudy. A chance of rain showers in the morning...Then a slight chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Warmer. Highs 55 to 60...45 to 50 in the mountains. West winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of showers 50 percent.

That Late May white stuff will be mostly melted & gone by the time you get there. Got good wet road gripping tires? Then no sweato, amigo. Buen viaje!

Now back to the Memorial Weekend Plans and BBQs.

Cypress the last time I was at Priest Lake the Mackinaw were in close, got three from the shore on a K/M,beautiful Lake, miss the area:(

Cypress - 5-29-2012 at 04:53 AM

baitcast, Still plenty Mackinaw in Priest Lake. Helped the state gill net 'em, a practice they've dicontinued.;)

baitcast - 5-29-2012 at 07:27 AM

Why gill-net them? I have a Bud who lives in Priest River,he's done the Baja thing with me a number of times, may go up there for a visit this summer.
Rob

Cypress - 5-29-2012 at 08:30 AM

The state fishery gurus think the Mackinaw are eating all the Kokanee. It was an attempt to reduce the predation on the Kokanee. Didn't appear to have much impact on the Mackinaw or the Kokanee populations.

baitcast - 5-29-2012 at 09:01 AM

Sounds like the Lake Pend Oreille story all over again??

Last I heard they had a bounty on the Kamloops
