WHIRLWIND BAHIA ASUNCIÓN, Memorial Day weekend.

Udo - 5-30-2012 at 08:55 AM

The weekend started by leaving central Orange County on Thursday morning.

This time my baby sister came along because she hadn't seen any of Baja below Ensenada, and therefore we took our time heading to Bahia Asunción to look at properties that were for sale. Kevin's place sold the day before we arrived. We also looked in San Rafael, Punta Prieta, San Hipolito, La Bocana, and Punta Abreojos. Absolutely gorgeous coastline. And in Punta Abreojos, next to the lighthouse sat a green house (not for sale) that had the million Dollar view...just breathtaking!
Bahia Asunción was the only place that had a "homey warm and fuzzy feel".
(Probably because of Shari).

Shari treated us to her special recipe of abalone burgers and baked local fish for dinners, and a scrumptious memorable breakfasts. Plus I feel I contributed somewhat by picking up 5 dozen oysters from the local co-op at La Bocana for 35 pesos per dozen.

We did not purchase any property on this trip because of my immediate and sudden health concerns (heart), and thanks to the meds I was taking i handled the drive in good shape. I even managed (according to my GPS) to average 61 MPH between Bahia Asunción and Punta Abreojos, thanks to a major upgrade in suspension on the Toyota FJ.

The return trip to the OC went a little slow (although we managed to make it to Ensenada in 7 hours), an hour to Tecate, then a 2-1/2 hour wait at the border. I've got to do the SENTRI thing! Tecate is getting to be such a crapshoot in the crossing.

This is the tractor they use to pull the pangas (thanks to the co-op)

Co-op in La Bocana cans all their sea food products

Shari invited us to their beach house for a fish party, and Sirenita's adorable son Isaac, made friends with my singing parrot.

Along the way south we met up with the now-famous 100 days Baja walkers

In Asunción, we dropped off a wheel chair, canes crutches, walkers, etc. which were graciously accepted by the town's mayor

My baby sister, Rhea, was amazed by the shell-hunting in San Hipolito

On edit, I forgot to mention that there was a huge bunch of new graffiti in the Valley of the boulders near Cataviña. These idiots really made a huge mess...just about every rock they spray their paint on, was painted on, even on the ones that had been already painted for years! These Baja locals (even from Bahia Asunción) have no conscience. Their names, along with where they were from, (that's how I knew they were from BA) was scribbled on they rocks

Thanks, looks like everyone had a great time. I know what you mean about the graffiti around Catavina, it's a shame.

Yep....;D the "bad kid" in the class pointed that out to the teacher....she didn't know what to say, other than to present some moralistic view of hitchhiking...

Udo,

Good report! Agree on the "rock art".

Take care of yourself.

The trip was fabulous. Shari and her family were gracious hosts. Funny the walkers that we ran into seemed normal. I wonder how they will do when the temperatures reach over 100 degrees.

Udo - 5-30-2012 at 03:49 PM

Also, Rhea, your face is all over Facebook.

Rhea - 5-30-2012 at 04:19 PM

My mother taught me to stay out of the street.

Where would one be able to buy canned abalone?

shari - 5-31-2012 at 07:38 AM

Rhea...welcome to the Nomad sandbox...nice to see you here and to have met you hermana.

Wilderone...you can buy canned abalone at some stores here in town.

Mulegemichael....I have your cans hidden in a secret spot...looking for a ride to mulege for them..are you there?

Udo - 5-31-2012 at 07:45 AM

Yes, Blanca, it was the three of us.
Shari had called earlier in the day, and I called when I arrived because your door was locked.
The white Nissan pick up was parked outside.

Really sad that we missed each other, Blanca!

John and I enjoyed meeting the three of you and we hope the health problems are fixed quickly and well so you can move forward with your plans.

Udo - 5-31-2012 at 07:55 AM

I could be in error, but I think that the majority of the cans get shipped to the far east (China, Japan). The co-ops appear to keep just a few.
I personally have found some in BA, Bahia Tortugas, La Bocana and Punta Abreojos.
The regular grocery stores do not carry them because of their expense, and therefore the locals are unable to afford such luxury.

Muchas gracias, Diana & John. Look forward to another trip.
I just found out that my "cardioversion" will be done on June 20th, with a follow-up diagnosis the next week.

Udo, yes - what a bummer that we missed you ..... Les was up a the other house (one minute headed north of us) with the little geo tracker we use day to day and I was upstairs with the phone turned off and really sick :(

next time for sure - you areinvited to lunch and again, the pens and pads were absolutely fantastic donations.

Our local co-op store always has cans of abalone and YT and oysters

If you have any questions about cardio-versions, head right back south and talk to Les. We spent a year dealing with his irregular heartbeat and now, thank God, he has been fine for a couple years. We dealt with the issue in Poland, in England and finally back in San Diego where it got FIXED !

woody with a view - 5-31-2012 at 03:47 PM

hey Udo, hope all is well. that area of the coast is pretty awesome.... hope to get back there end of summer.

Udo - 5-31-2012 at 05:44 PM

You have to make the trip to Punta Abreojos, Woody. What an awesome coastline. However, 4X4 is a must for tracks to the beach sand. The entire road from BA to Punta ABreojos is very doable in any type of car or truck. It's about 65 miles and only about 500 feet total of washboard. Helps to have the tires lowered to 15 or 20 psi. We had ours at 18 psi on the FJ Cruiser.

The shell beach in San Hipolito was awesome! We could have spent the entire day picking through shells.
