Went to Red Rock Canyon Federal Conservation Area camping. The recent weather front made the daytime temperatures perfect (about 75 when it would
ordinarily be about 92). Many slot canyons to hike – some with water. Saw a fox and bobcat. This area has desert tortoises, wild burros, bighorn
sheep and lots of other wildlife. Probably better seen mid-week, or in winter. There are spectacular red rock areas, but I didn’t get a chance to
hike around those – our time was limited and had to pick and choose from a dozen hikes. Would recommend this area in conjunction with a Valley of
Fire, Overton trip.

Yes - about 15 miles directly west of Las Vegas. You can see the city from certain high points. But you don't get any sense of the large city nearby.
Just yards off the trail system it is designated wilderness - goes for miles. You can hike offtrail, and backpack and camp at elevations above 5000
ft in the wilderness. Valley of Fire, which also has camping and hiking is a red, red, RED rock area, about 40 miles north of Las Vegas (relatively
close to Red Rock Cyn, so you could do both. I drove through there once - really spectacular. To miss the Int. 15 traffic we went through Mojave Natl
Park and past Kelso dunes - hardly any traffic on the two-lane road. Would have loved to stop at that old pioneer town in Yucca Valley off Hwy. 62.
Was with a bunch of Sierra Clubbers. They don't stop for nothin.TMW - 5-30-2012 at 10:05 AM
