Missing Family Member/Dog in San Jose

desert_doll - 6-1-2012 at 03:02 PM

Hello Baja Friends,

Last night my dog/family member, Ruby, ran off from the docks in the marina of San Jose del Cabo. She was so scared of the local fireworks that she cleared a 12 foot fence in a diagonal jump from the dock ramp! My mom and dad and friends have been frantically looking for her all last night and today. I am desperate to find her so I thought it would be good to post on this forum so I get as many eyes as possible looking for her. She could be in the desert, the hills, the beach, the estuary, or the town of San Jose. We need all the help we can get to find her!

She is a large, red colored, Irish Setter. She is petrified of fireworks and she is not from the area so she has no idea where she is. She will be skittish and scared but is not aggressive.

If you find her, please call me at 714-920-2825 (US) or 011-521-322-1000-977 (Baja).

All security at the marina are aware of the situation too. Thank you for any help finding Ruby!

Ateo - 6-1-2012 at 03:07 PM

Desert Doll. Good luck. Please keep us posted. I lost my dog in San Ignacio once, but she was found by a sweet Mexican family. Good luck.

dtbushpilot - 6-1-2012 at 03:15 PM

desert_doll, welcome to Nomads, best withes in the search for your dog. Judy at Baja books and Maps might be a good source to help get the word out too http://www.bajabooksandmaps.com/ ....dt

Reward posters are easy to make and often yield results! My 9mo old Lab ran off for a few days and the $100 reward got me a phone call and my dog back!! He hates fireworks, too, as most dogs do. Good luck. Tio

DENNIS - 6-1-2012 at 03:26 PM

Gawwwdammm....I hate to hear things like this.
I'll pray for your happy reunion.

Cypress - 6-1-2012 at 03:29 PM

desert_doll, Welcome aboard. Hope she finds her way home. Good luck.

goldhuntress - 6-1-2012 at 03:33 PM

My heart goes out to you and I sure hope you get her back soon. I think there are a couple animal rescue groups there. Maybe contact them so in case they run across her they can contact you.

desert_doll - 6-1-2012 at 03:51 PM

Thank you all so much! Prayers can help a lot too.

We have made 2 runs of flyers and have them all over town with a $500 reward. We think she is out in the desert. I am worried about her coming out on the highway. My mom has found a guy who flies aerial planes in that area so she is going to see if he will keep an eye out. They have checked with all the local vets. marina security, local housing areas and neighborhoods. They have been in jeeps and on foot running up and down in the riverbeds, estuary, and beaches looking all day.

The fireworks are supposed to start again in a few hours so I am praying sombody finds her by then. There is a big fiesta in town this weekend so good and bad - more eyes but also more fireworks.

Thanks for the bajabooks link. I will followup with Judy.

wish I could help

I'll second the reward poster idea. Perhaps give them to cops, taxi drivers, and others that move around the area on a daily basis.

I lost my dog once, it was terrible, and then I found him, it was wonderful.

desert_doll - 6-1-2012 at 04:56 PM

I am in Cali too and feeling so helpless. This post was the best idea I had on how to help my family from here. I wish I could be down there searching myself.

My parents have put flyers at all the hotels, restaurants, taxis, and city buses. This is not looking good but I am trying to stay positive. There have only been 1 or 2 people that said they thought they saw her around 11pm last night but no sightings or word today.

Your positive stories of being reunited with your is helping and bringing me hope that she may have found a nice person who will return her to us.

Does Ruby Have an ID Chip?

Gypsy Jan - 6-1-2012 at 05:17 PM

The lost pet recovery effort in Baja has become a lot better, by leaps and bounds, over the past few years.

Compile a list of vets and animal shelters in the area that Ruby was lost, and leave flyers. Many of them have the equipment to scan a lost animal and they most definitely have access to the internet to spread the word.

Scan the flyer into .jpeg format and post on the local internet bulletin boards.

Good luck, I hope that your beloved family member is found safe and is returned to you.

bajajudy - 6-1-2012 at 05:27 PM

We are headed out the door to walk Pops. I have a leash in my pocket just in case.
I did see a dog this morning while we were swimming that looked like a setter but I thought it was with a guy who was walking. The reason it caught my eye was that we seldom see that breed, but in all honesty, it was just a profile. I didnt see what color the dog was.
BTW...you have been talking with my husband. I didnt mention the dog to him this morning because, at that time, it wasnt important.

No need for a sorry after the day you've had. Best of luck for your family. Hope everything works out.

I saw a dog this morning that fits that description on zippers beach. I will look for him tomorrow.

Bajarunner--- our hope that the crisis with your son-in-law passes quickly! It is always difficult, and even more so when it is the next generation.

Desert Doll --- Dang, we sure hope your beautiful Ruby is returned to her home soon. Your offer of a reward should help!

Thank you all so much for your help in looking. She is still missing as of tonight. She does have a microchip and they have checked with some vets. A friend is also calling the rescues around. There are posters everywhere and hopefully, after the fiesta tonight, enough word will be out about her and she will come home soon. Again - thanks so much. We will be checling around zippers beach asap too. I appreciate the tip on a possible location.

Bajarunner - I am so sorry for your loss. I am dealing with a life and death situation with a dear friend and understand how a lost dog could feel petty. Ruby is a huge and dear part of my family though. You and your family are in my prayers.

Hola, I would also use the VHF (marine) radio and get someone that speaks GOOD spanish and englisha that know the local channels and you can/will cover a lot of area and also ask to please relay !! any good boater will help in this matter in seconds..just tell your folks to ask..boat folks help each other as a way of life and I hope this helps you and your girl... if you have not found her by the morn.. please post early tomorrow and I'll email my folks that live east of the marina and can spread the word FAST !! as we have had a house there since 1980 and are well known and liked...sorry as I am falling asleep.....

DENNIS - 6-2-2012 at 06:52 AM

Appropriate time for a bump......

bajajudy - 6-2-2012 at 06:56 AM

I sent out emails to all my dog contacts. Saw one of the Baja Safe ladies at a party last night.
Did you put flyers at the fish tables?
Hope to hear soon that you have found her!

desert_doll - 6-2-2012 at 07:41 AM

Just checking in to say we still dont have her. We are checking all the beaches this morning. There are flyers at all the gas stations, oxxos, with the cabbies, restaurants, and all over where the night race and fiesta were last night and today.

Thank you all for still looking. I am hoping she found safe shelter with someone who just hasnt seen the flyers yet. Im petrified she could be hurt but since we havent found her yet i am still hopeful. I will let you all knpw the second i hear any news.

Please stop with the bump requests. They are so mean to a person desperate for help and 2,000 miles away and feeling helpless. Please put yourself in my shoes and have some compassion. This isnt just a dog. Ruby is my family.

Cappy's VHF suggestion is a good one. The families of boat captains and crew network pretty extensively in most seaside communities.

captkw, I think dessert doll thought that that meant to bump it off the board. DD, it means bump it back to the top of today's posts so it's more visible , in the headlines so to speak. Good luck today, I've got a good feeling your going to find her! I wish I was there to help look.

desert_doll - 6-2-2012 at 08:42 AM

Im sorry for the comment. Im my other forums, a bump means "get it out of her." My apologies.

We did do the radio and actually had friends heading back to ensenada offer to turn around to help. They are considering a radio advert but my friends at the fiesta said that people were literally walking around with the flyers and looking. I think the word is out well. Now it is just a matter of finding her.

My apologies and thanks again!

shari - 6-2-2012 at 08:47 AM

many mexican families listen all the time to the radio so that might be a darn good way to find your pooch...good luck!

Speaker car! I think that's a really good idea:light:

desert_doll - 6-2-2012 at 09:35 PM

I just told my mom to do the speaker radio too.

So, i found out the boat radio thing was only to some friends. They tried channel 22 today. My mom cant find any cruisers net in san jose, like there is in most ports. She is wondering if any of you might know what time and channel runs one? They dont have SSB. Only VHF. Any other suggestions?

We are sending emails to friends in other ports so the news can travel up and down the coast and boaters can watch the beaches. Ruby has spent the last year and a half on the sea so i would expect her to stay coastal, hopefully smelling the water. Local friends and their teenagers have posted her on their facebook too.

Thanks for all you help and outreach. It is making me really feel supported and feel like i am doing all i can. I want to take you all out for margaritas when i come back to cabo soon!!!

Now that you/we all learned a lesson, the easy way, here is what I have done with my dog when we go to Mexico.

I have a special Mexico collar that he has on when in Mexico. It contatins not only his nomal USA ID, but a tag I hade made up in Spanish with where he lives, the best Mexican phone # and also "GRANDE RECOMPENSA"
with his name on the tag. Naturally he is chipped but do not hold much hope that the chip would get us back togehter.

vgabndo - 6-3-2012 at 10:31 AM

I came here second, to learn this news! My day starts with tears of joy. I am relieved amazingly enough.

Now, since my white cat brought in two dying Cedar Waxwings yesterday, Cathy put bells around her neck. My grey cat Goose, now thinks a strange cat has invaded her home, and has declared war on the bell wearing stranger. It is very unsettling for this human to see their confusion, anger, fear, and unhappiness around this change. They grew up sleeping in a pile together.

Whew, better than worrying about when the local militia will start the shooting war in the State of Jefferson, but still a worry.

I'm glad your day will be happier!

A happy tail...

thebajarunner - 6-3-2012 at 03:10 PM

Last week I took my yellow lab to the mountains for a men's retreat with the words of my better half ringing in my ears...."Bring back that dog, or else"

So, I took 20 guys, plus dog, on a hike around Pinecrest Lake- Mali is an awesome hiker, especially with a lake alongside the trail.

Well, I was leading, she was in the back of the pack, lost track of me amongst guys she did not know, and peeled off to follow hikers headed the other way.

When I discovered she was 15 minutes missing it was Panic City!

I jogged all the way back to the starting point near the marina, and found her, just as she was about to merge into large masses of swimmers, picnic groups, etc.

Needless to say it was less than 30 minutes of real upset- so losing your pooch for days, then getting the dog back- Priceless!!!

Chazz snuck off one night in Loreto following a scent, and I was frantic for two hours. I drove toward town and found him partying with my architect's dogs. He has a "Loreto-Reward" tag on his collar now.

Whee! for a found Woofer.

We were in a Motel in Calexico and had a Husky locked in the car (cool day) while we unpacked....came downstairs and a cab window was broken, dog gone. Several DesertExplorer.org vehicles were with us so a radio message got a search started quickly.

Our friendly Husky was found over the RR tracks being petted by the loading dock workers. Hurray!

Now for the humor....The glove compartment was open, and nothing was missing from the truck cab. Why? Our big headed male Husky was in the camper and the pass-through windows were open. I can just imagine the would-be thief breaking in, a dog running our and away, the bad guy opening the glove compartment and then hearing a drooling sound behind him, turning around and seeing a red eyed monster head trying to get closer.

Luckily, he ran off before his face was slobbered with kisses!:lol::lol:

Hi All ~

Howard - the collar suggestion is great. Ruby had one on but her tag had fallen off the night before so mom had written her number on the inside. We were nervous that nobody would take her collar off to read it. We were told by the vet in San Jose that he was unable to read a chip too. I found GPS collars on amazon (after she went missing!) They seem pretty cool and cheaper than the reward we paid. Haha. Garmin's version has web tracking so you can get online and know exactly where to go to find your pet. Amazing stuff!

Dennis - There is no doubt Dad will keep her on the short leash now. Ruby is a dock dog and likes to run around and say hi to everyone. Even if people don't know my parents, they know Ruby as the dock welcome crew. The crazy part is... At the end of the dock they have the huge gate. On the sides of the gate, there is an extension gate that goes out 5 feet or so on each side to stop people from being able to climb over. When Ruby freaked out, she ran to the end of the dock and jumped from the dock walkway, over the side extension gate and out into the desert. This hardly seems possible but being a huge Irish Setter, she pulled it off. My jaw hit the floor when I heard.

Windgrrl - thank you for the song. Was that animation done for us or what? The dog looks like an Irish Setter and then comes home to a woman which is just like Ruby's story. That was so sweet.

Willy - I LOVE IT! Thank you for the pic and to all you nomads that helped!

Diana - thanks for taking Tom and Maggie out to celebrate :-)

Cappy - I am in Orange County. Mom and Dad are half way up the penninsula on their way back here so Ruby will be home for me to shower with kisses in a week or two. I can't wait. If you are close, we would be happy to go play with you and Tasha. We go to the dog beach in Huntington sometimes. Ruby is with my parents but my lab and I go together.

BAJA NOMADS - You guys got me through the worst part and I really can't say thank you enough times. Your sincere congratulations messages are heartwarming. I really will post up when I head to Cabo again and meet any of you that want to have some cervezas or margaritas with me. You all rock!

Here are a few pics. The last one is what I imagine Ruby's dinner looked like when she came home. I know there was several days of fresh pescado cooked up. That is her favorite.

Update

So I just realized I didn't give the details...

Ruby was found about 5 miles away in a neighborhood my family hadn't gone into yet. She was seen and almost ran over on Friday morning by a delivery driver who, seeing the posters and getting in touch with my parents on Sunday, expressed wishing he had grabbed the dog and made some money. Haha. At least his sighting gave my family a direction to go hunting in.

While my parents were searchingg in the neighborhood Ruby was last seen, they got the call from the woman who had found here and had just discovered the poster in Walmart. My parents went running and crying all the way there and were happily reunited.

Ruby's story... Ruby was running with a pack of dogs through a neighborhood. A woman saw her and knew she was not an average street dog. She coaxed Rubideoux away from her gang and brought her into her home. She didn't know where to start because Ruby was completely covered in stickers and burrs from the desert. Nonetheless, her family cared for Ruby for the weekend until she came back home to us.

Mom said the woman's son was devastated to see Ruby leave as they had definitely bonded over the few days together. Mom laughed that the family is going to have to go get the boy a dog now to fill the gap in his heart when Ruby left. The family took Ruby into their home out of the goodness of their heart and would have kept her as a loving pet if they didn't see the flyers. That made giving them the reward even that much better. A small token of gratitude for an act of kindness and generosity.

Hey Desert Doll,
Thanks for the info on the gps collars. Gotta check those out. Rubys ears make for nice sails on the dingy. So glad this was a happy ending!!
