Why Do Posters Feel the Need to Announce That They are Leaving the Board?

Gypsy Jan - 6-2-2012 at 04:31 PM

Why did Jesse and Skeet and maybe others I don't remember feel the need to announce their renouncement?

I don't get it? If you want to go away, then just go away.

I am not being dismissive or saying that I won't miss their commentary, but I do not like being blamed as a member of Baja Nomad for their disenchantment.

EnsenadaDr - 6-2-2012 at 04:39 PM

Well, one reason is justified, because when Skipjack left no one knew what happened until he came back and said he had been ill, and now no one knows what happened to Mr. Bill, so it might be a good idea to notify someone in case people get worried.

101% agree!!

thebajarunner - 6-2-2012 at 04:39 PM

I have left twice, in my nearly ten years here.
Both for issues that I do not intend to rehash, but which were personal and painful.
Each time I left- just left- no comment, no adios, no great speech of denunciation.
Each time, after some time had passed, I was contacted personally by members, we discussed, and I still stayed away.
And, each time I have returned it was due to a recent trip south and a sense of seriously missing the board.
Will I leave again? Quien sabe? Who knows?
But, I can assure you that if I do, I will not tell you, I will just fade into the night.

I think great departure speeches are part of the "drama queen" aspect of those that feel compelled to make those spirited announcements....

Just my view of things.

(And, FYI, if you stay away too long you better remember your password, cuz the site will dis-remember you)

Russ - 6-2-2012 at 04:49 PM

I think they are pretty pi$$ed off at the time and are expressing their thoughts. There are many many that have just faded into the sunset. And I'll miss many of them. You've been here a long time Gypsy Jan and know the frustration any forum can give you. As you know there are some that are abrasive that seem to enjoy making inflammatory statements. Those shouldn't be addressed in any way. Other than letting the moderators know they are inappropriate.
For those who have left us I hope they are better off without the badgering that goes on here.

DENNIS - 6-2-2012 at 04:50 PM

Because the board has been important to them, and they feel compelled to say they're disatisfied with the changes. They still feel attached to the friends here that they had at one time, but many of those friends leave the board, one by one, and soon no one familiar is left to talk with.
Everything morphs.....as does the board. Leaders take over and followers leave.

I, for one, miss many of the posters who tolerated me when I first arrived and grew to be my friends here. The list is long.

I see this place as a neighborhood bar. The clientele is solid and they have their own seats, but they come and go. Sometimes they die.....and that happens here. We honor in death those Nomads who have passed in our midst as well as those we hear about from times past.

What I'm trying to say is.....posters who announce their departure just want to be recognized as worthy of someone saying, "Please don't leave."
And.....they usually hear that.

Umm. Not a worry.

Skipjack Joe - 6-2-2012 at 04:59 PM

Usually people leave because they are fed up with something. Something bothers them and they don't see a change coming. Leaving is a last resort. It's really a failure of a nomad community to address the issue at hand. So I don't look upon this very favorably.

I'm fine with a person announcing his intention to leave. It brings to light once again the issue at hand and how important it was to that one member.

dbrooks - 6-2-2012 at 06:14 PM

I've been a lurker since 2004. There are a lot of shrivs on this board - but some of you take some great trips and pics. The drama is fun to read sometimes...try not to take yourselves too seriously.

The last what?

thebajarunner - 6-2-2012 at 06:58 PM

Dennis sees it as the neighborhood bar,
I liken it more to the beach campfire, where you can wander in, and right back out if the discussion goes south.

But, I am sticking with the "drama queen" observation.

In business I have an iron clad rule....
Don't tell me you quit unless you really mean it.
Cuz once you say the magic word, you ain't comin back, Baby!!!
Don't even think about it.

"I quit" means------
"I quit"!!!!

Paula - 6-2-2012 at 08:32 PM

Great question Jan!

And I find that I have replies to a several of the replies here. I considered separate posts with quotes I am answering, but that is more space than I want to fill. So I offer my numbered response:

1. Jan, I think you can add Grover and Braulio to the list of announcers. I think all had differing reasons for announcing. All four were interesting contributors in very different ways. One who didn't announce is my husband, Don Alley. His posts were valuable and intelligent, and at times unreasonable. He just decided that there were enough things in the world that p****d him off, and why listen to all the c**p here??? He is now happily active on several guitar boards, and he is delighted with the moderators ability to keep things civil without ruining whole conversations. He has decided that basically guitar players (he is an incredible one) are a lot smarter, nicer, happier people than fishermen (he's a good one of those too).
I think you should not feel at all responsible when people leave, you are NEVER an offender! When people need to announce they are usually frustrated with a few people, often the Big Boss and a handful of other rather dominant posters.

2. Ensenada Dr, I think you must be a really good Mom!

3. DENNIS, I really miss that wild and crazy totally offensive, but absolutely spot on smart and RRRRRREEEEEEAAAAAALLLLLLLLy funny guy that showed up out of no where. I confess to having reported you a time or two when it had nothing to do with me, you were just so out of line! By the way, you may be the only person I've bothered to report:biggrin: But being the new suave and debonaire DENNIS is probably better for your mental health? You are still very entertaining, thank you.

4. thebajarunner-- puh-leeze. Is a beach fire really so different than a bar? Last I knew you could come and go from a bar as you like. You are picking nits here. I almost called you a nitpicker, but I want to keep this post civil.

I have thought of leaving, and someday I may. I will probably have to announce, as I always feel a need to explain and defend myself, and to have the last word. I do know that if I leave it will have more to do with my own response to something rather than someone else's words. I am just shocked at times by my rudeness and hostility here! Actually I have distanced myself, gone for weeks with out looking in, but then I'll just check todays posts, and someone will post a trip report or a great set of photos (hi there Igor!). The good stuff here is very very good.

And if Mr. Bill never shows his pathetic self here again, it will be too soon for me. Oops, there I go... see what I mean :saint:

You've always been one of my favorite people here, Paula. Thanks for hitting the report button on me when you did. No telling what trouble I'd have gotten into. I'm sure you saved me from my own oblivion.
Thanks again.

Skipjack Joe - 6-2-2012 at 10:21 PM

So Don Alley left as well?

That's too bad. In addition to being a good guitar player and fisherman he was a pretty good photographer. I'm surprised that he was frustrated with this site because he never said anything. And I guess he left in the same manner.

I agree that more active moderation would improve this site. But the hostility is way down compared to say 5 years ago. I can still remember the showdowns Baja Blackie had with David K in those days.

Osprey - 6-3-2012 at 06:13 AM

Well, I'm not leaving unless I lose my posting rights. I love it here. In fact you'll all note I haven't said a word about Pompano in months, I'm even warming to the Kapt. and Lil' Tasha. The goat and I don't see eye to eye but we can co-exist. I'll even miss skeet's bombast and perhaps, just maybe if the little professor were to leave who would we trust for true leadership. I could get through a half a year of down Dennis with my attitude right now.

Maybe it's because things are going just swell for me right now. Two days ago I caught a 242 pound amberjack. What a tussle. Whew!

LaPazGringo - 6-3-2012 at 09:56 AM

As someone who's been around on online communities since the newsgroups of the late 90s, my experience has been that when someone feels the need to go out with a bang and say their peace, invariably it's to play victim and express how they've been mistreated and to garner one last bit of perceived sympathy before either returning immediately or soon thereafter when they realize that the real world doesn't afford them the attention they crave. It's really quite pathetic.

Careful Paula, I posted something about Mr. Bill's attitude, and the post is missing from this thread today!

Maybe he's lurking and sending in reports.

Thanks Osprey

thebajarunner - 6-3-2012 at 03:46 PM

Now you can remove tongue from cheek and tell me what you really think....

Actually I am a really good guy,
just hate to sit through these emotional goodbyes.

As I said, when I get ticked, I leave,
when I get over it (or get another fresh dose of Baja dust on my shoes) then I return

No teary farewells,
No gushy reunions.....
No drama

I think it’s O.K. if you know you’re dying.

Then those people that were really p**sed (but acted nice about it) to find out that you already had THEIR favorite and only beach campsite for miles could at least plan a little.

I think most who have announced their departure had friends here and perceived it as a community. I personally wouldn't leave a party-- for whatever reason-- without leavetaking; to do so seems rude.

And to leave a party because of a few obnoxious jerks, does not place blame on the rest of the group. I wouldn't take it personally...

I think it is a good thing when someone lets us know that they are leaving. Leaves no room for "where is so and so ?" We know that for reasons x,y or z, they have left the sandbox.

I'm not leaving ..... you all get to put up with me a lot longer

I guess the same reason that you would make this post.

I think it makes sense that someone would post that they are leaving, the same way you would tell a manager at a store that you are not satisfied with your shopping experience.

There are many great things about this site, but many bad things as well. I have found that there are many sites that I now bounce around to and from and try to get the most of the good stuff and add what I can.

But I can understand why someone would announce why they are leaving.

Bad service??? I just don't go back

Telling them why you leave their business may make you feel better (likely your motive for doing so) but it ain't gonna fix things.
I just leave in silence and do not return.
Like I would wish that unhappy Nomads would do.

Having been in the service industry for many years, feedback from consumers/customers is very important. Without it, a business owner will never improve. Any good business person will pay dearly to find out how to have continuous improvement. If you are not happy with a service it is always good to, politely tell any manager or owner what you feel the issues are.
