The aircraft hit some power lines and crashed near Baroten, close to the Fuerte River, Higuera Gomez said.

The 61-year-old pilot, identified as John Slater of Phoenix, Arizona, was killed and the other three people aboard the plane - two women and a man - were injured.

The injured passengers are Liam Guzman, Zulia Powers and Jacy Brown, all from California, Medicos Voladores spokeswoman Sofia Ruiz said.

Although it is always distressing to learn of such tragedies happening to those who unselfishly serve people in need, I am tremendously relieved to know it was not our own Capt. Mike. All they said on the news here was that a 61-yr old pilot from Phoenix who was flying some doctors was killed in Mexico.

I thought the worst.

Thank you to the Nomads for your research and answers. My condolences to all.

shari - 6-3-2012 at 08:30 AM

thx Jeans - i just got back on line, my wife Janeen who you and many others here know had surgery wed and had to be moved to ICU 2 days later due to complications. She is not doing well.

The phx chapter of the sams went 2 weeks ago and all made it back.
I am so sorry to hear about this crash. It happens. I had to go inactive on Sams for a while but hope to be back flying with them later this year.
Appreciate everyone's concern. I am thinking for those that didn't make it and easy recovery for those that did.

Teens hurt in plane crash in Mexico

BajaNews - 6-3-2012 at 08:57 PM

Written by Jen Lebron Kuhney

A pilot was killed and three teenagers were injured when a small plane crashed in Mexico during a volunteer medical mission, according to the organization that sponsored the trip.

A friend, 18-year-old Trevor Flahive, identified two passengers as Hayley Brown, 18, and Julia Tower, 17. He said both attended La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad and had traveled with Liga International: Flying Doctors of Mercy three times in the past year and were passionate about providing medical aid.

The four-passenger Cessna left El Fuerte, Mexico, before 9 a.m. Saturday on its way to El Carrizo when it crashed into power lines shortly after takeoff, according to a report from FoxNews Latino. El Fuerte is almost 700 miles southeast of San Diego.

“It was a shock,” Flahive said when he found out about the crash. “They’ve always both been very loving and caring people.”

Pat Spier, a registered nurse and a board member of Liga International, said the middle-aged man from Phoenix who was piloting the plane was very experienced and has volunteered with the organization for several years. She said a 15-year-old boy from the Southern California area was also on the flight and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Flahive said Brown is in serious condition with a coma, but that her family has been told by doctors that she is expected to fully recover. Spier confirmed the condition of the passengers but declined to name them.

Tower suffered moderate injuries and was taken out of an intensive care unit Sunday, Flahive said.

Liga International has been providing free medical care to small towns in Mexico since 1934. About 20 to 25 planes fly 60 to 90 volunteers to three different towns every weekend from October to June. The organization makes 4,000 to 5,000 round-trip flights each year, Spier said.

All of the pilots are volunteers who use their own aircraft to bring doctors, nurses, surgeons, dentists, translators and other medical volunteers to treat up to 300 patients each weekend.

The only other major incident the organization has had was a plane crash in 1995 that left two doctors dead, Spier said.

“Everyone involved is a volunteer but we do not take any chances,” Spier said. “We have an excellent safety record and do everything we can to prevent something like this from happening.”

The Liga Youth Program has high school- and college-age students interested in the field of health care volunteer by teaching children about proper hygiene or creating care packages for some of their patients. Spier said often times younger participants will have family or friends attend the trip as well, but will sometimes be split up to accommodate the small aircrafts used.

Spier said some of the boy’s relatives were on the trip this weekend, but not on the plane that crashed.

Spier and Flahive said the teens are expected to return to the U.S. by the end of the week. Flahive said Brown’s parents flew to Mexico to be with their daughter.

Flahive and some of the girls’ friends are arranging fundraisers to help with travel and medical costs for the girls’ families. He did not have details on Sunday afternoon, but said he was going to try to coordinate the fundraiser through La Costa Canyon High School.

He was a local flooring contractor, Jack Slater. Some more on BPI.
This is what flying Sams int'l admin sent out yesterday:

Many of you know people who fly with both the Flying Sams and with LIGA. It is with great sadness that I have to report to you that LIGA suffered a tragic accident this weekend.

One of their planes with 4 on board crashed while flying from El Fuerte, their base of operations, to one of their remote clinics, El Carizo. The pilot was fatally injured, and the three passengers are in stable condition in the hospital.
The pilot was John Slater, and the passengers were, Liam Guzman, Jacy Brown, and Zulia Powers (as reported by the Mexican press).

Our hearts, concerns, and prayers go out to them, and their families. We wish a speedy and complete recovery for the survivors.

I will ensure that LIGA knows the Sams stand ready to assit LIGA in any way we can. I believe we are all diminished by the loss of even one
