free road rosarito to tijuana

I had never been on this road and was surprised to find it a modern three lane freeway type road. any of you nomads use this route to the border?

Never have used it to the border, use it often from La Mision to Ensenada.

i don't mind the $8 each way on the toll. the view is worth it and it's prolly quicker, unless heading to otay. i took it once from la mision to ensenada about 25 years ago. that was enough.:lol::light:

There is insurance on the cuota. It covers damage caused by something other than yourself or another motor vehicle.

Yes, we always use the free road. Safe, well-maintained and secure. The free road is the commercial heartline of the Baja and it is safe.

We use it all the time. This morning we left Las Gaviotas at 9:00AM. No wait at the military checkpoint by the Fox Studios. Few minutes at SENTRI. In the US at 10:00AM. And we saved 27 pesos!

No we come in from TJ at night and take the toll road to Rosarito

Sounds like he is referring to the road to Otay

And the La Mision to Ensenada free road is a great alternative to the lumpy bumpy cuota.

I suspect it is 10 minutes longer, but a nice diversion from the same old same old....

Drove this road in 1996 coming back from scorpion bay. Ran out of money after paying an unexpected mordida, losing the front grill on the Isuzu rodeo, and buying too much beer. Coming into Ensenada I realized I had no cash, and no funds in the bank for an ATM withdrawal. Worst thing was the only thing we had left was water and it got contaminated (somehow driving out the north road by shaking and stuff) by soap. We pulled over in need of water for hydration only to find soapy water and no money. Not good.

Good thing I was 21 and was invincible.

Anyway, I drove from Ensenada to the USA on all the free roads. Boy did it suck.

But yeah, I bet the road is very sufficient these days, maybe just not as quick as the toll road.

Im sure the more mature nomads will remember for a long time after the toll road was built there was always an off ramp right before the toll booths and a on ramp right after. I guess thats why were still paying for it!:spingrin:
