I usually go through Orbitz but most travel sites offer car rental, reserve before you travel though as once you get there you are at their mercy which is NONE. Just stick to your guns when they try to brow beat you on insurance and make note of all dings, dents, scratches etc. prior. Never had a problem with any hokey pokey on return. Have a great trip.....

bajajudy - 6-6-2012 at 10:43 PM

So I assume that I will get to meet you then.
Sorry but I havent rented a car in a long time. I will ask around.

AKtundra - 6-6-2012 at 11:53 PM

Used travelocity or orbitz in December used Avis and had not problems. Did notice Fox stations also in several smaller towns. Your reservation will be in dollars, but your contract will be in pesos, so do your conversion in advance so you know you are paying the agreed price before you sign the contract

Much better to drive a car with Mex plates. Also Much easier than renting in the US and jumping the hoops to take it into Mexico.

CortezBlue - 6-7-2012 at 02:38 AM

AMEX

I setup a reservation with the best price, they don't charge your card online

Print out your reservation and shop all of the rental car companies when you arrive

As far as insurance, I use the AMEX's insurance program for $30 per rental, but, you must take the Mexico insurance or suffer the consiquences.

woody with a view - 6-7-2012 at 05:08 AM

$623/week????

Yup . . . it's the beginning of high season and after all it's a G-20 destination now.
Bet all prices will rise a little . . . or a lot. . . in SJDC.

woody with a view - 6-7-2012 at 05:15 AM

it must be pesos. fox rental starts a $42/week for a little car. is Fox open until 8pm if i make a reservation online. plane lands at 7.15pm.

Yes Judy, We will stop in and say Hi!!!

bajafreaks - 6-7-2012 at 06:39 AM

I searched around for different companies before we rented a car a few weeks ago out of san jose del cabo airport and Fox had the best rates especially since we returned the car in Loreto. Got the reservation online and no hassles with them trying to upgrade insurance etc. I'd use Fox again.

With a smile and a thank you?

acadist - 6-7-2012 at 07:39 AM

Woody, I have only done it once and when I filled it up prior to return at a Pemex by the airport is the on ly time I have been blatently ripped off on gas. They pulled a masterful job of distraction and with a car full of kids and a plane to catch I was not going to argue. The other thing was that t
I reserved a mini van and they tried to put me in the smallest thing possible, sir your rods can go through the seat......but where do the kids sit??? Finally after about an hour the got a vehicle all of us and all our luggage could fit in.

For my Guadalajara trip I used Priceline.com.

Think it was around $20/day for a compact four seater. Of course when we got there they showed me a better car that I could upgrade to for $5 more a day and I went for it. Then taxes and fees and BS......they also wanted an additional $5 so the wife could also drive. We turned that down.

When all was said and done I think it ended up being close to $40/day, up from the $20 when I booked it. Oh well, that's still pretty cheap to be mobile in a foreign country and have the freedom to roam.

I drove that car like hell knowing it wasn't mine.

castaway$ - 6-7-2012 at 08:07 AM

Just got back bout 4 weeks ago and we rented from Hertz/Advantage, $7 a day for a little Chevy with a stick instead of automatic, great little car. We drove it hard exploring the TS area took it back with an inch of dust everywhere and they didn't charge any extra.

windsurf14 - 6-7-2012 at 08:27 AM

I used Antonio Miranda at Cactus last time and very happy. $630 for a Jetta for 3 weeks with Mexican Liability.

I have since learned of the Amex insurance program from a pilot and have signed up for it. Provides additional primary insurance in most foreign countries for a modest fee.

I kitesurf and surf and you would not believe how much gear we put in the Jetta. Huge fold down trunk.

Advice,

Take multiple images all around the car at the agency before you sign a contract. Any dents or scratches, have an employee note it on the contract.

X2 - I have had the agent point to any and all scratches, dents, window chips, etc. as I took a picture of him pointing at them when I picked the car up. The agent was happy to do that and the first one said "Very smart Senor!" The pictures saved me one time and when I showed the picture to the return agent he apologized and ended any problem right there. Make sure everything works and it has 4 good tires and it does not drive weird or brake badly. Had issues with this in the past.

I have used Thrifty rental at the airport in SJD several times. They have a 4 door small size pickup that always works great. I searched from the thrifty website and found .....

Good catch! Don't forget to also make sure there is a jack AND a lugwrench as well!

gallesram - 6-8-2012 at 09:10 AM

I have found that Hertz is the only rental company that doesn't force you to purchase insurance; and their rates are usually competitive with the other agencies. I can't tell you how many times I have tried other agencies (National, Avis, Fox, Europcar) lured by the low daily rate, only to be told at the counter that the insurance was mandatory and usually around $20/day, which doubled the cost of the rental.

woody with a view - 6-8-2012 at 09:21 AM

hertz website says pickup location is permanantly closed SJD airport!

Skipjack Joe - 6-8-2012 at 09:50 AM

Orbitz prices for Cabo San Lucas, 10/13-10/20. Very Cheap.

any ideas on stopping a $75 weekly rental from turning into $180/week? i need to call my CC company and see what they will cover. also, if i have full Mex insurance on my personal vehicle does this take the place of any of the rental insurance?

Heather - 7-15-2012 at 10:36 PM

My $122 for 11 day rental with Dollar turned into $445 with mandatory liability insurance and tax. It was the Nissan Tilda which drove around 5 passengers minimum, and 8 max. a time or two!
Shuttle from airport to San Lucas was about $17/ person, so for the 5 of us it would have been close to $200 just for that!
