Catavina/Santa Ines Question

Gerald - 6-11-2012 at 09:14 AM

Has anyone been on the loop road from Santa Ines(Near Catavina) east into the desert and then south back to the highway?
I have a Baja California Atlas 2007 that shows that road.
It shows "Mission Santa Ma de Los Angeles".

Thanks

Some of the maps do show a road from Mission Santa Maria back to hwy 1 near San Ignacito but it does not exist. It's a foot path only if it still exist. I've searched for it several times but never found it. I believe David K posted where someone did walk in to the mission on that trail several years ago.

We stay at Santa Inez the first night on our way south and the last night going north. I've always wondered what is east of the RV area. We arrive late and depart early, in a hurry, so I've never explored the road.

Anything interesting for a 2WD 3/4 ton with a cabover camper to explore? Like an oasis with a lake, date palms, and mermaids?;)

Where does the cordial American guy on the ATV with the riding dog live? He always comes by to say hello and chat during our winter baja adventures.

Going east out of Santa Inez is the road to Mission Santa Maria, about 15 miles. It's a rocky kind of road but not bad until you get closer to the mission then there are a couple of down hills, one being the worst. Going down is the easy part coming up is what David K calls the widow maker. It's best done in a 4x4. There are palm trees with a water crossing that can be deep depending on the time of year. Search for Mission Santa Maria and you should get several trip reports over the past couple of years.

The brave Nomads:

Yup, 4WD with lockers or A-TRAC was required equipment to get there and back without assistance! See the rest of the photos to see who's rig didn't get out under its own power!

Yes, it is a foot trail...
