Just before Sunrise, Seiners & Dove

Russ - 6-16-2012 at 07:03 AM

Counted 13 out side the island and 4 outside the mouth of the bay.

Having a lot of trouble uploading to PhotoBucket. I think it's my Hughes net.

Hope those seiners are cleared out for the dorado tournament, they really screw stuff up

Pescador - 6-16-2012 at 08:27 PM

Well, I just got some information about the seiners tonight and it seems that they are netting sardines which are going to the Bluefin Tuna Pens at Ensenada. So they have stripped the whole west side of the Peninsula and now they are screwing up things here.

Actually, as far as Dorado are concerned, there is probably not much effect except as a secondary influence, but it sure does knock the hell out of the whole system.

So next time someone finds it interesting that Bluefin tuna brings such a high price, you can tell them, that we are making small payments so that the Bluefin can be enjoyed in Asia.

Interesting that ALL the seiners moved out of the Mulege/Chivato area yesterday. Couldn't see a single ship from here. Then after dark what appeared to be a patrol boat was cruising the area. And by midnight there were a few seiners out there working again.

"Actually, as far as Dorado are concerned, there is probably not much effect except as a secondary influence, but it sure does knock the hell out of the whole system.
"

But if the seiners are taking the dorados' easy food supply won't/haven't they (the dorado) move to happier fishing grounds?

tanks

I dunno, Russ, but the radio chatter was that the sardines were wide open in our area, and the boats all moved up to the Craig Channel. We saw 8 of them leaving today and they were so loaded up they could hardly keep afloat. The really bad part was they had a batch of Green Mackerel die on them and they just dumped them in the water. There were floaters all the way from the North Light to the harbor at San Bruno, with literally millions of dead fish floating in the water. Can't wait until tonight when they wash ashore, and the stink starts.
Maybe Greenpeace has the right idea with ramming these boats, but I suppose that would only land you in jail and deported. :fire::fire::fire:

Went out in the tin boat today. Cabrilla, needle fish, trigger, bariletti and a bone fish. No Seiners in sight. :o:spingrin:

There is quite a bit of research going on right now to develop vegetable-based fish feed (some of it derived from seaweed). Tasters do not seem to be able to tell the difference between fish raised on vegetable feed and fish-based feed, so there is promise that the baitfish slaughter may end at some point in the near future.

No, they are legal to seine, according to PESCA. But it sure is an ugly situation. They dumped about 10 tons of fish for some reason and now we have weed patties full of rotting fish.

Cypress - 6-21-2012 at 01:36 PM

Somebody screwed up! The net was probably rotten, ripped open and dumped 'em. Couldn't handle the load. :(
