We decided to go have breakfast and a walk at the beach early yesterday. By the time we finished breakfast the sun was coming out at La Jolla Shores. The usual groups of scuba divers, surfers, kayakers and walkers like us populated the shore on the south end. We started our walk north up to the Scripps pier. Passing the pier we noticed a few swimmers with their caps on thinking there may be a swim scheduled. A little further on I noticed an egret right at water’s edge not 20’ from me. Not having a telephoto just a 50 mm lens I thought just how close can I get to this guy, as he doesn’t seem to be bothered by us. When I got to about 10’ I took a few shots. This was one independent bird!
We walked a little further on where some surfers were headed out, watched them for awhile then turned around to head back. When we got to the pier the few swimmers had grown into a crowd. Turns out it was the Pier-To-Cove swim. They swim from the Scripps Pier to La Jolla cove (1.5 miles).

You did good with the Egret, Ken. The closest I've been able to get is about 40 feet.
Once, a pelican let me get to within 12', then he flew away.

I wonder if Baja Barb was in that group. (elgatoloco's wife) They live nearby and she does a lot of rough water swimming.

It is highly unlikely that I will find out as Puerto Vera Cruz like all of the coasts of Mexico is a hot and sticky place to got to. I would probably never leave my home in Baja if it weren't for the heat.
Two years ago, I did visit the coast for a day trip. After living in Baja, the coast line at Puerto Vera Cruz and one small town to the North did not impress me much. I am so spoiled by the beaches we have at home.
Puerto is an industrial shipping city, and I saw hundreds of containers and some big ships. The central square was alright, but it didn't have the art of Oaxaca City. All I wanted to do was take care of my business and get back here and out of the heat, so I didn't see much else.
Antigua, Vera Cruz where Cortez first landed was an interesting little town, I got a few pictures of some of the ruins and some interesting gnarly trees. It had been hit hard by a hurricane the week before and the whole town was cleaning up, so, wasn't it's prettiest moment to visit.
Here in the highland rain forest, one is protected from hurricanes. The climate is more gentle than not. I even wore my long sleeve tshirt all day the other day, slept under a comforter last night, turn on the fan when I am doing my yoga, other than that, the temperatures are pretty darn kind under the canopies of green that surround me here.

Vera Cruz has been on my bucket list since i first heard this song back in jr high http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z_lHonqEQM notice Armando Peraza back there on the bongos? he reminds me of Dennis!!! :biggrin:

Oh Ken, I love how the bright yellow boots show up on your Snowy Egret (it is a Snowy - no?).
