Pothole picture - Tortugas Road

DianaT - 6-26-2012 at 08:40 AM

Just one picture of one of the bad areas of the road from Vizcaino to the BA turn-off. This one was fairly close to the BA turn-off.

If you are going out there, after the last Los Pinos field, open your eyes. :-) The worst areas really do sneak up on you.

Great idea... I'd rather have these instead of the real 'topes'...

rts551 - 6-26-2012 at 12:04 PM

Maybe when they finish with our roads they will move up North.

Any word from down south as to if there is going to be some repair done on the Tortugas Highway before the BA Fiesta?

Yes, and there were miles of "road" that looked like that back then. To me it was worse than the washboard of before "pavement", but it sure kept you on your toes, and not many serious accidents back then-------excess speed was out of the question except for the crazy racers.

DavidE - 7-2-2012 at 10:13 AM

One can easily find "The Old Baja" just by driving a mile or two off the pavement. Warm beer, risky fresh food, tepid mineral laden water. No lights at night. No food until someone goes for leņa, frijoles, tortillas, chilies y sal. It's all there, and waiting for whomever is nostalgic for "The Good Old Days".

We live out La Bufadora Rd. I dont know which is more dangerous The pot holes or the people dodging the ones in their lane.:lol::lol:

not yet. but our road is sure nice. They paved the rest of the street in town as well. They are talking about paving along the coast. What does your Delegada have to say.

Now, I can see why you requested information about Jeep Wranglers.

No surprise why that road failed

thebajarunner - 7-2-2012 at 04:24 PM

Too many roads in Baja have been one inch of a/c over native graded soil. (a/c stands for asphaltic concrete, by the way)

I was surprised a couple years back to watch them working on added lanes between Ensenada and Guadalupe. They were down a couple feet, which would them be filled with base rock (I hope) and then a decent lift of a/c.

In California that would likely be 2.5 feet of base and two lifts of a/c, at least 1.5 inches per lift.
Out on 99 they are going down 3 feet.

The Baja road crew might just as well get some spray cans and paint that dirt black and forget about it. And, as pointed out, a ragged paved road is more dangerous than a regular dirt road.

Sad waste of time, effort and money.

Barry A. - 7-2-2012 at 04:39 PM

----speaking of "a waste of money"--------I have long contended that in a Desert environment, many of the expensive concrete bridges over gully's (that often wash out) could just as well be crossed with Texas Crossings. Let the occasional flood water wash on by----it will all be gone within hours.

Much of highway 395 crossing the Mojave had Texas Crossings back before the '50's-------it worked fine as I recall.

waco's and tope's

captkw - 7-2-2012 at 04:44 PM

Hola, the day that I dont hit a tope that was "Hidden" or The rare surprise waco that I could not miss are not going to happen in my lifetime...but thats part of baja !!!! K&T:cool:

rts551 - 7-2-2012 at 04:55 PM

Waste of money?????? I remember what was like when I was learning to drive in the 50's. no. I think they have done a wonderful job. otherwise you guys wouldn't even be down here.

Its easy now compared to what it used to be like. When I built in Abreojos 60 miles of hell.... now perfect, even with a few pot holes!!!

Very cool advertising idea. You slam on the brakes and narrowly avoid being rear-ended in a melee and glide over the horror like over nothing at all, only to be greeted by the suspension system advertising painted on the road ahead of you.

May be illegal in certain jurisdictions (not Canada?), may cause road rage, check your local listings for details.

Naturally there's an international symbol for the problem.

In our case, that would be Delegado. Now, would you quit hogging the road crews and send them our way?

Barry, when they first built the BA road (the new road from the Tortugas Road) there was one of those large gullies covered with a bridge built out of rock and concrete. Within the first couple of years, there was a big rain storm and it was gone in a flash. They rebuilt it more like a vado --- just like you suggested.

That's for sure, Marc. We used to drive into BOLA on the "really old" road which was a dirt track thru El Desengano Mine north of the new paved road, and on to near Mesa la cantera where it re-joined the "new" paved road, thereby missing some of the worst potholes. The dirt road was in excellent shape back then, and much more fun than the "new" pavement which was in horrible shape. The only problem was that it was hard to find the west end where it left the main highway, but after we had the mileages down pat, not so difficult. That very old dirt track goes thru some really spectacular cactus forests, and was well worth it to drive. Don't know what shape it is in now, tho------it has been years since we drove it.

That area must be still richly rewarding to visit. Untouched desert and cardonales are quite beautiful.
