Bicycling for Peace, currently in Gerrero Negro!

Pedalingforpeace - 6-28-2012 at 11:51 AM

Aloha! We are Chris and Diana, we left Ensenada over a week ago and have already had quite an adventure on the Baja Penninsula! We are now resting at Malarrimo hotel, camping out and letting our arms heal (we are both suffering from an aggravated nerve condition which leads to random tingling and numbmess of the hands.). While we are here, we are happy to meet with any of you, currently sitting to the laft of Mas Margarita at the local coffee shop, Caprichos.
If anyone is interested in learning some yoga, kung fu or tai chi, please contact us. Also, Diana is very knowledgeable in Ayurvedic medicine and massage, whereas I am knowlegeable in Chinese Medicine (needles, moxibustion, cupping, tui na - medical massage) and cranio sacral therapy, we offer these services by donation and are happy to help you!
If you are a member of a group and would like us to speak with your group, school, or if you just want to say Aloha, let us know!
Aloha and nice to meet you all!

chippy - 6-28-2012 at 02:35 PM

Sounds like you are peddling more than just bikes.

shari - 6-28-2012 at 02:40 PM

Aloha to you two too and welcome to the Baja Nomad sandbox. My goodness, your trip sounds amazing....good luck & suerte. Oh and sure, I'd love a massage if you want to ride out to the Pacific side...hang a right at Vizcaino! We have LOTS of projects on the go you can trade help for camping. Are you on a schedule? it's gonna be pretty unbearable hot riding on the highway further south...like through the big grades before Sta.Rosalia..you may have to ride at night.

goldhuntress - 6-28-2012 at 02:58 PM

Aloha Chris and Diana! Nice to see you posting, I hope you keep it up, check in from time to time and let us know whats going on with you. Say hello to mas margaritas, I think I know that guy, lol. So can you tell us a little more about pedaling for peace? What is your mission and where are you headed? I heard you are going around the world, is that so?

DianaT - 6-28-2012 at 04:27 PM

It would be interesting to hear your tentative plans etc. A few years back we met a bike rider who was going around the world --- with a few train rides involved partially due to time and beating the weather in some places.

Do tell more!

Pedalingforpeace - 6-28-2012 at 04:28 PM

Chippy, darn tootin we are doing more than just biking, we are doing our part to help the planet and the people, feel free to take a look at our site and of course, so many thanks for your support.
Shari, Sadly you are a bit too far out of our way and potentially more than our bikes loaded with 70 kilos a piece could handle... As for the heat, well, it happens, what can we do but become stronger:) As for biking at night, I dunno, depends on the place, I reckon braving the heat may be safer than nighttime biking here... Your place looks pretty cool, if you have freinds on our path, please direct us to them!
Goldhuntress, Aloha to you! There is a lot to our ride, we speak at schools, give "by donation" medicine, teach vegan cooking workshops, help people understand nutrition, teach yoga, kung fu and tai chi, and really, I think the main idea is to be examples of what is possible. If people take the time to read a little about us, we are two folks who just want people to see that truly anything is possible, you just have to DO! It is hard and scary often times, but the result is priceless. We met with the local govt today and were given rides to the local univeristynto speak, but alas, they are on vacation. We may put some organic gardens in at Malarrimos, if that doesnt happen, it may be time to keep on keepin on:). Aloha everyone!

Pedalingforpeace - 6-28-2012 at 04:35 PM

DianaT, tentative plans are as follows, we are velo tourists, i.e., we bike a majority of the time, I would say 70 to 80 percent, our primary aim is to have an adventure, not set a personal record for pedaling 100 percent. I left Lancaster, Pa in 2010 and now, with Diana whom I met at her yoga studio in Ensenada, will be spending at least the next 10-15 years biking the planet doing good where we can. We will continue south through the Americas, hang a left on a boat in Brazil and go to Africa where We will meet with a very good freind of mine, Mr. Phil West and pedal north, from Morocco we will take a boat to Portugal, do some sort of route through Europe, head through the middle east however the various wars my country is so intent on starting will allow, India, where Diana became a yoga teacher, Asia, where I spent much time when I served with the Navy, Australia, and lastly back to Hawaii where Iwas living when I got the idea for all of this while apprenticing in my Chinese Medicine and Kung Fu studies and learning farming, andmof course, how to surf! Aloha!

wow

Pedalingforpeace, Welcome aboard and good luck.:D

Pedalingforpeace - 6-29-2012 at 03:16 PM

captkw - thanks for the kind words about Diana, I am a lucky guy, aside from being very pleasing to the ojos, she manages to deal with me which is something I have had a hard time with for the last 36 years - lol!
I had a 4Runner when I was living in Hawaii learning to be a simpler human being, farming, kng fu, yoga, chinese medicine... SURFING! I became vegan due to the fact that when I went o check out a guitar for my 30th bday, the 4runner dumped the tranny fluid on the driveway of what turned out to be a vegan community, as I was 3 hours from my place, I decided to stay for the night, that became a three month stay and 6 years later, well, now Im biking the world and my meals since leaving ensenada have been ahuacate, frijoles, arroz, and nopales, I of course decline asking what the beans are cooked in=] I ended up learning to replace a tranny, took me 2 of the three months I stayed there...
I guess San Ignacio is the next point, Diana has been the route organizer, me the cheerleader=] Sounds right, it was San something, we have a connection there and are supposed to do some kind of project, when she gets here Ill write down better details....
As for the chek point, they have totally cool since I entered Mexico, the best was on the mountain road connecting Tj to Ensenada, all the guys had thier guns in the air and were calling me Forrest Gump, long live Forrest, I felt like an arriving dignitary=]
Aloha!

Chris and Diana, you should contact these two that are in South America now, they know all about the money changing before border crossing that captw. mentioned and can help you avoid paying mordida and other money saving tips. Really a cool couple. Thier blog is fun to read.

capt. mike - 6-29-2012 at 03:38 PM

it has that Ayurvedic plant stuff in it, a drink sold by MLM groups.
personally i think it is a racket but for some they say it is a cure all.

shari - 6-29-2012 at 06:34 PM

Do stop in and see Juanita at Casa Leree just off the square by the mission in San Ignacio...she is a fascinating woman and you will get a good rest at her wonderful hacienda...ask anyone and they will direct you.

David K - 6-29-2012 at 06:41 PM

Have a great adventure... and be careful as most of Hwy. 1 doesn't have a 'bike lane' (paved shoulder) yet... and is only wide enough for two trucks to pass by and no room for bikes to safely stay on the pavement!

Don't be affraid to try and spell the town: 'GUERRERO NEGRO', wrong or as G.N. (cowards) lol  It is Spanish for BLACK WARRIOR, an American whaling ship that sank trying to leave the lagoon that now has its name, as is the 'new' town since about 1957.

Pedalingforpeace - 6-29-2012 at 07:09 PM

David K, many thanks and Aloha! We are staying at Malarrimo in the back and the owner Tony gave us a tour of the place including a full rundown of the Guerrero Negro, pics, history, super cool. Great adventure to be sure, its already been mind blowing, almost two years for me! Stoked on Baja, the driving has been hectic at times, the main thing Inhave found to watch for are the ABC busses, everything else O.K., those particular busses and thier drivers, Hell on Wheels! mahalo!

Shari, thanks and will do! Does she allow camping, our budget is fairly tight and usually camping fits the bill:)

Aloha for tonight, we will log on tomorrow morning and then you can keep an eye out for us on the road! Aloha!

Capt. Mike, I dont follow the Ayurveda refrence...?

David K - 6-29-2012 at 07:16 PM

Aloha back to you and Mahalo!

Baja is an awesome place and experience... it is only too sad that our news media has scared the heck out of those who don't know about the place or the people down there!

Baja has more history and stories than one can absorb in a lifetime... (but I am trying)!

Safe Journey to you both!

Pedalingforpeace - 6-30-2012 at 08:16 AM

Davidk, thanks dor the blessing, we head out as soon as we pack our last few belongings and swig the remnants of a soy latte! If you run across any vegans who love a high falutin cuppa joe, AND they happen to be in Guerrero Negro, send em to the super mercado for leche de soya and then to Caprichos as they now haventhe drill down, also, cocina economica LUPITAS for a huge rice beans enselada plato! Aloha all, well see you on the road!

David K - 6-30-2012 at 08:33 AM

That is an English word, and as I have said, 'mi no bueno' at spelling! Thank you none-the-same! ;)

Aloha! writing from a breakfast at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio! Camping at Patates on the Oasis, so sweet! pics on FB, blogs being written and a video of the bats and ridiculously large bonfire=] Aloha everyone, if anyone is heading through here tomorrow, we are looking for a ride as folks are telling us the road is ridiculous. If not, no worries, we can just push our bikes... for 30Ks!!! EEEEEEEEEE, life is fun on the road, we trust its treating you well! Aloha!

shari - 7-2-2012 at 09:54 AM

try to stop in and see Juanita at Casa Leree! you can probably fry an egg on the highway on this next stretch...hope you can get a lift! you can just go to the gas station and ask people for a ride who have pick ups...that's how they do it in these parts...the pump attendants will help identify who is going where.

Pedalingforpeace - 7-2-2012 at 10:02 AM

Shari, will do, casa leree.... too funny on the gas station, thats what we are planning! As for the egg frying, oh boy=]

Capt Mike, I know Zrii!

Aloha!

Well worth the time to stop and see her place and talk. Just east and north of the square.

Pedalingforpeace - 7-2-2012 at 10:24 AM

tripledigitken, this is in san ignacio, we havent really found anything akin to a square....? will look for sure...before we go back to oasising it! Mahalo=]

tripledigitken - 7-2-2012 at 10:37 AM

The square faces the mission in SI. 5 mins from the lagoon. Must see.

Ken

shari - 7-2-2012 at 10:52 AM

just ask anyone on the street where it is...not in the square but just off it on the other side of the mission

MexicoTed - 7-2-2012 at 09:36 PM

Hey Chris and Diana,

I met you in Guerrero Negro at the cafe on Friday. I was with 4 buddies on our way back north. Sounds like your trip is going well so far. Since I was just down in Mulege and Loreto, I will confirm it's gonna be hot. But it's also beautiful.

You'll find plenty of places to camp along the Sea of Cortez. Might suggest you stop by Las Casitas in Mulege and say hi to the owner Javier. He knows everyone and might be a good contact. Also, camping along the beaches of Bahia Concepcion will be a highlight.

Good luck and I'll be following you.

Ted

When in Mulege, camp under mango trees

Mulegena - 7-2-2012 at 10:10 PM

and on grass, no less!

In town and off the highway Huerta Don Chano, on the north river road toward the lighthouse.

Enjoy the quiet friendliness of this family-run place.

Just ask in town and head out towards the lighthouse. You'll see the sign for some good relaxation, camping and good shower.

Pedalingforpeace - 7-3-2012 at 08:57 AM

BUMMER! Well, just a lil bit,p we just figured out that we have not actually seen the town, it is on a different street further past the lagoon/oasis.... Well, theres always "next time"... Sigh, onward and southward, I hope it wasnt too much of a must see...:). We arrive in S. rosalia today and will be staying with freinds, let us know if there is anything we should see! Aloha!

Mulegena - 7-3-2012 at 09:20 AM

They will take you to see the church made by Gustav Eiffel.

Ask them to take you up Mexican Mesa and upupup the microwave tower for a fantastic view down onto the town and the sea. Be sure to put it in first gear coming down or risk break burnout.

David K - 7-3-2012 at 09:21 AM

Oh, if youn didn't take the one mile paved side road into San Ignacio, you missed one real treasure of a town in Baja!

Pedalingforpeace - 7-3-2012 at 09:34 AM

Mulegena, muchas gracias, not to much troube with brake burnout as we are on bici's:), though the have been a few times where the road is so steep my brakes got mushy and at the bottom of the hill Incould see theynstarted to melt....

David K, thanks for the pics! Would you explain how to post them, I tried a few times to no avail.... We stayed at Patates, it was perfect if that exists, and I had one of the coolest bonfires I ever made, and we hung out with a French lady, a Mexican gentleman who is a photographer and an Italian gent who was on a bike which is only believable by the pics!!!!! Ill be posting on our blog when we get to the next town and here as soon as I figure out how:)
Thanks for the tips and the help and the ideas, well be back online tomorrow, now we Vamanos!

Well, from any photo hosting web site or from any web site, for that matter... you can hot link the photo to appear right here in a Nomad thread. Many of us here use the free hosting site 'Photobucket.com' However, not everyone has taken a moment to reset the upload size to 800 or less pixels in width, as per this site's max. frame size... So, some photos will stretch the Nomad page wide, off the screen when they are over 800 pixels wide!

Here is a how to:

You can put pictures on Nomad from any other site using the IMG tags on each side of the image url [img] and [/img]. The photo hosting site will usually provide you with a link for direct posting on forums.

HERE is my Photobucket how to:

For Nomads who have been posting too big photos on Nomad... Doug has asked (and those with standard 15" monitors appreciate) to limit the pixel width to a max. of 800.

The sizing is done when you upload photos TO Photobucket from your PC. So, if you didn't do that already... and they are at the full size setting, they will stretch the Nomad pages wide (on normal monitors).

How to resize them with Photobucket, on your album page:

1) Click the red button 'UPLOAD' at the top of the Photobucket page.

2) At the top of the Upload box that appears, see (in small blue text): 'Customize your upload options', and click that.

3) Choose a reduced size. 640x480 is nice for most photos. I usually only go to the 800x600 size for maps for max. detail on Nomad.

4) At the bottom, click 'SAVE'! Thats it!!!

Now, until you change that setting, all photos will be uploaded to Photobucket at whatever reduced size you picked!

To post your photos on Nomad, use your mouse and copy the link called 'IMG Code', below the photo you want to show... and paste it onto Nomad where you type in your text... You can post several photos at a time, but I suggest not more than a dozen, and double space between each photo link. Specially if you add some captions under each photo.

DavidK - Muchas Gracias! Im on it :). Staying at a freinds of a freinds in Rosalita, so stoked, we even have a very small AC unit:). The weather isntmso bad though, in the shade its great, blown away by the industry that appears to be in this town, especially from years past.... Went for a run on the beach and that was over quick after we saw various pipes discharging different colored liquids into our path:). Cest la vie I reckon, it saddened me, the beach coastline here krepresents the most trash I have seen on a beach in my life, no exaggeration..... Sigh... Other than that, ninja in paradise. Again, if anyone knows of any projects we could be a part of, people who arent feeling well we could give medicine too, especially if they do not have money, schools groups to chat with and share, do let us know, its why wemdo what we do!
Update on the construction on hwy 1 from san ignacio to rosalita. We got a ride and thank goodness, the road was a mess, if you know of anyone towing anything big, two people had to get pulled ut by heavybmachines when thier boats/trailers bogged down....
Thats all for now, once I get my hands on the computer, I will add some photos! Aloha and thanks:)

David K - 7-4-2012 at 03:38 PM

Sounds like you mean SANTA ROSALIA ?

Yes, it began as a French copper mine run by the Boleo Company in 1885...

Please enjoy this travel article that appeared in Baja Bound's newsletter I wrote: http://www.bajabound.com/bajatravel/eiffel_church_of_santa_r...

A little practice and you will get the hang of posting photos! Let me know if I can be of further assistance...

Pedalingforpeace - 7-4-2012 at 03:42 PM

David K - we are about to see where my photo posting from google is at=]
Thanks for the info on the copper mine, we are going to ninja inside manana and get some good pics=]

Here you go, one of the blog photos.

1) Copy the photo's url (begins with http:// and ends with .jpg
2) click on the photo icon located in the row of small boxes, just above where you type a post on Nomad. This:

3) Paste the photo url into the pop up that appears.
The photo link is now on Nomad, and you can add text above or below it, plus more photos to a single post.

Ha!

I would love to pedal kayak dow the coast, that was an idea of mine to make the adventure a bit more adventurous! I was told the currents were tough, but then, somis biking in the desert! The ONLY difficulty I could see would be thatnof securing the bikes and gear, but I guess, big enough kayak, no worries....
Dont even go there with making baby talk!!!!!!!

...kayaking down the coast would be quite a different set of dynamics & concerns allround,,, a rental in b.c. would be fun!
...all th'best!

Hola, sorry you missed the lagoon at san ignacio (nice) do you folks have a game plan for baja sur....or are you going to "wing it" your getting closer to the nicer part of baja!!! IMO and are you folks on a open time table or have you set a time/frame with places you want to see !! wishing you the best..Keith & Lil Tasha

Pedalingforpeace - 7-5-2012 at 10:36 AM

Capt KW, we didnt miss the lagoon, it was rad, pics are on the site and especially in the blog, I even was attacked by a mouse...TWICE while collecting wood. What we missed was the mission and ladies Bed and breakfast in the town. The lagoon was one of the raddest places we have checked out thus far! We have an overall gameplan, ie we head south and look for projects to be part of, schools to share with andngreat spots to relax and practice our yoga and kung fu.
Our timeline is open ended, BUT, if we are in a place where we are unable to do any good works for others, we will only spend a few days. The main purpose is to help while seeing the world from a bike! An adventure of epic proportion before we die, after this is over, in roughly 15 years, we will settle down somewhere where we can grow food, be left along, do some surfing and live out our years in peace and quiet:)
The overall route is from Pennsylvania, where I started in August 2010, to San Fran, and then south all the way to South America, catch a boat to Africa, go north, boat from morocco to portugal, through europe, mid east asia, australia and finally back to Hawaii where I first got the idea. Thats as big a plan as we have, mno specifics, of course there arebplaces we would like to see, macchu picchu, pyramids, karnak, etc. but those are more potential waypoints, we just want to have a helpful adventure of epic proportion:)
Aloha and thanks again for the kind words!

COOL !!

ENJOY the short time we have on this chunk of spinning rock !! and you will find most folks on this planet are good hearted..but,,all it takes is a loser/theif to screw up your gig,,so always have your guard up and have a GREAT journey!! K & T

Ive hadnsommany run ins with losers and thiefs, what can we do:). As a guy told me a while ago, its all a wash in the end. If they are going to try and take my life, Ill put some serious focus on it, beyond that, butterflies and pinwheels in the breeze, ive lost more in my life than many will ever hope to see, far as im concerned, im waaaaaaaay ahead of the curve, everything at this point is icing on the cake till I die:)

MexicoTed - 7-10-2012 at 03:19 PM

Any news on Chris and Diana? Have any Nomads seen them. Should be in Bahia Concepcion or south?

goldhuntress - 7-10-2012 at 04:02 PM

Whats that then eh?

Sweatpeas - 10-21-2016 at 11:47 AM

Search function this site is great. What ever happened to these people? I know peace was not achieved but where did they end up?

David K - 10-21-2016 at 12:38 PM

Spelling is important when seeking data.
The town is Guerrero Negro (Black Warrior).
It might be the most misspelled place in Baja.

Huh? Always add water to your coffee.
Now that that's cleared up, what happened to these people?

You were asking what happened so I thought you might have tried searching so since the town was misspelled, I thought it may be a reason your searches didn't turn up anything. They actually last posted here on Nomad on 10-10-2012 from Ensenada: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=63074 and suggested we go to their Facebook page to follow them further. I did and asked if they would come back here and do a wrap up (for those who don't 'Facebook').
