What Fireworks?

DianaT - 7-4-2012 at 10:29 PM

There was a huge crowd from both north and south of border gathered in Imperial Beach this evening to enjoy the beautiful fireworks show off the the pier. OPPS

This was the fireworks show that was over before it started. About 6 minutes before the 9 p.m. start time, all of the fireworks went off at one time!

It was amazing but awful for our poor dogs. We were just about to put them in the bathroom with the jacuzzi running to protect them from the fireworks. One of them is really terrified by fireworks.

From what we have heard so far, it was a computer error and it affected more than IB.

I walked down to the pier and the crowd was stunned and wondering. When everyone realized that the show was over in about 5 seconds, they started to leave. Then we stood out front and talked to several people as they were leaving IB and the reactions were interesting. They ranged from gee, I always wondered what it would look like if they all went off at one time, to that sucks.

We had a great firework night in Grover and Pismo Beaches tonight. The 4th is big here and it actually started about Sunday and will go on thru the weekend. We bbq'd and walked to the beach. Lots of illegal fireworks as always. It got pretty wild and the crowd really got into it. Then a good show from Pismo Pier. I'm lucky in the dog department, she is not afraid of fireworks. She went with us to the beach like she has in past years, relaxed on the blanket and enjoyed the show with us.

The "Big Bay Boom" was a dissapointment for over 500,000 people. One huge explosion at 8:55pm, lasted a few seconds.

Yes Bob, we are now seeing on the news that it was definitely all of the Big Bay Boom ---- guess computers are not all they are cracked up to be.

Then they didn't have to wonder what it would be like to sit in the traffic to get out of IB! Street in front of my house was a parking lot for over an hour and a half after the 'Big Bay Bust'!

My dogs and thousands and thousands of other dogs are real happy about the screw up.

Arf, arf!!

that's too bad! i went to bed at 8.30 glad i didn't miss anything!

Just saw the video on the morning news. The video was taken from a high vantage point, overlooking the whole bay. Looks like the IB, Coronado, and Harbor Island shows all went off at the same time, 5 minutes early and in a few seconds. Quite spectacular.

Nice images Ken, thank you. I wish the US would retain more of its heritage though. If you've never seen the "Grito" on 16 September in México it is a worthwhile experience. Padre Hidalgo was one brave individual facing off to brutal Spaniards like he did. Lucky gringos: Playing the part of ham in between slices of Canada and México!

Man....this is national news......

I have friends from florida posting this story on Facebook.

Yes, it was over quickly and in a way easier on my dogs. We had considered leaving town because of the dogs, but glad we saved the money.

We are only a couple of blocks away from the pier and the explosion really sounded like the entire pier must have blown up!

The company responsible is talking about trying to make it up to the communities who paid a lot of money for this. It was a very unusual 4th!

I've done that before. Just put the dogs in the car, which they love, and go for a long drive east on 8.

Spend time in the United States (away from Baja Nomad), and you will see plenty of American heritage. I lived in the Midwest for 2 years, and I had enough American heritage to last a lifetime. Now, I live within 2 hrs of the US/Mexico border, listen to Novelas on TV (while my Esposa watches them), and have a choice between Indian, Thai, and Mongolian nearby.

See why I like to shoot off my own fireworks?

thebajarunner - 7-5-2012 at 12:54 PM

Although much maligned on the other fireworks thread,
at least I did mine in an orderly fashion.

So there, all you scoffers....

No "premature aerial emissions" for our team....

vgabndo - 7-5-2012 at 01:16 PM

In many ways San Diego County may have led the way to a new and more American way to gratuitously blow stuff up. More and better. Blow up more stuff faster. Given our history, how can that be un-American. It reminded me of Shock and Awe over Baghdad. (except no women and children were dying, and it only lasted 10 seconds, and didn't cost a billion dollars.)

DavidT - 7-5-2012 at 06:45 PM

Just saw a report on the evening news. Legally the fireworks company fulfilled their contract.
That's not right. This is Amercia, there has to be somebody we can sue.
