El Camino Rural Costero - coast road to Cabo Pulmo

bajajurel - 7-8-2012 at 06:26 PM

Has anyone driven this road lately from San Jose del Cabo to La Ribera? This is the coastal road that goes by Cabo Pulmo. I have read that the road is graded but not paved beyond the first few miles south of La Ribera.

Can a standard rental vehicle negotiate the road?

I live on that God forsaken road. You will surely die. Your car will fall to pieces and you will be left to starve or die of thirst, which ever comes first.

Perhaps, however, you will have a great adventure, as long as you give yourself enough time to enjoy the views and don't mind bashing down a washboard road. It is bumpy but passable in a rental car. Stop for lunch at the restaurant in La Fortuna, or at Zac's in Zacatitos.

Be aware that your rental agreement forbids you from driving on dirt roads so if it breaks down be sure to tow it back to the pavement before you call the rental company.....and it might be a good idea to have it washed before you bring it back......dt

Driven that road plenty in rentals...as dt says...hose it off before returning, especially the underside.

Thanks to all for the replies. I love to put a rental through it's paces! Look forward to trying it this week!

Be careful down the side arroyos because of sand. I've pulled a few Jeep not 4WD out of a fix! Washboard is rough but air down and turn on the AC. Oh yeah, a few coldies! Buen viaje. Tio

Hola El Jefe,

How far is La Fortuna from the end of the road by La Ribera?

I think that Buena Vista must have the record for the most topes per capita.
Good thing the rental car company did not check the shocks after I returned it:bounce:

On another note, Dave, I had hoped our timing would have been better in hooking up with you.

The Cross Roads Country club in Vinorama has great Margies and good food.

You might want to consider buying a shovel.

Be sure to bring water for you and your car.
