Pocho Spanish

thebajarunner - 7-11-2012 at 03:42 PM

From the Urban Dictionary

pocho

It's another word for spanglish. When Mexican-Americans try to speak spanish but unknowningly place english words in there. Sometimes certain words in spanish sound better when describing things.

After dialog with Ken Cooke on another thread I though we might continue the discussion in the proper forum.

I call it 'pocho', others call it 'Border Spanish" "Baja dialect" etc.

So many words, common to Baja, that are clearly not Spanish.

Carro (car)
Peekup (pickup)
Troque (truck)

the list goes on and on and on.

I used the word "la lengua" to refer to language and got called on it..... look it up....
That is where the word "lingo" came from.

FYI..."Pocho" is also the word used to describe our cats with no tail...and mexicanos who live in the states or kids of mexicanos who were raised in the states.

From what I've heard a "Pocho" is a Mexican raised in the United States or an American of Mexican decent that comes to live in or visit Mexico. I'm not sure if calling someone a pocho is any worse than calling someone a gringo or chilango or any of the other slang type words, you tell me.

Google "Pocho" and be amazed

There are many, muchisimo, aspects to the term,
I just mostly use it as 'la lengua de la frontera"
but there are many more twists to the word.

Go to Amazon, it is the title of several books.
