todos santos area

need some help por favor.
friends (family) here from Australia, looking for place to stay in the Todos Santos area.
they are on a limited budget, looking for nothing fancy, definitely secure - basic lodging near surf.
they will be with a camera crew, filming an Australian surf flick.
i am unfamiliar with the area, so any suggestions will be appreciated.

To my knowledge there is nothing near the surf.

However, my recommendation is to stay at Hotel California

Todos proper is a mile or more from the beach. might as well enjoy the place and expect to ride to the beach.

gracias Woody and Udo....also, doesn't have to be Todos Santos proper. Any great suggestions between Cabo and Todos would work out well.
By the way, Woody, stopped by your secret spot a week ago.....everything was gorgeous except the water was full of sea lettuce....very hard to fish!

There is nothing between Todos Santos and Cabo. I just drove the area last week.
The Hotel California will give you a 15% discount if you give them a Discover Baja membership number (use mine...15882).

If you want to stay in Cabo, I recommend the Mar De Cortez hotel. Very secure parking with a coded entry. It is one of the old original nice hotels in the old Cabo days. One block from the marina, steps from Cabo Wabo. Eating around Cabo can get a little pricey, but some taco stands are available away from the Marina. Lots of "CABO" souvenir places within steps of the hotel. Shop around and don't be afraid to bargain to about 1/2 the asking price.
Mar De Cortez is about $60.00 per night and is about 40 minutes from Todos Santos (old town), another ten minutes to the newer area and add 15 minutes to drive to the beach area. Most of the beach areas are gated now, therefore you have to have a spot in mind if you need to get to it.

There is a place called Casa Simpatica that is within walking distance of the surf break at San Pedrito. It's very inexpensive. Alternately, there is a hotel called Las Tortugas that is walking distance from the break at Los Cerritos that is not too spendy.

Caveat Hotel California: if you're not the party type, don't stay here. Expect a band to play Fri-Sun nights and you'll be up until the band stops playing.

Sample the wares at the Tequila Bar next door.

Don't think Todos is limited budget. Don't do a rental sight unseen.

The tequila bar is across the street. The band is not that loud, but I agree on the noise. We are early to bed type.

Cerritos Surf Colony. $80.00 per night for a "surf villa" steps from a pretty nice break. Good restaurant, as well.

Hi there,
Hotel California is cool for the bar and late arvo drinks but the rooms are overpriced and the restaurant even more so There are many places to stay between Todos and Cabo but none really qualify as budget.
Todos itself has few budget options but our little place just might fit the bill (casarancho.net).
We have budget rooms with shared bath and private bath and a huge separate kitchen/dining area that is perfect for large gatherings, cooking, editing, etc. We have a sweet pool, cool roof top deck for sunset views, plenty of parking and are halfway between town and the beach so it is nice and quiet.
Our rates are very reasonable and have great spaces for this type of group/family gatherings. We just hosted a film crew from the states (sorry cant tell) who checked out today and had a blast. By shear luck they scored 2 of the best days of the summer and left with noodle arms, sunburns and big smiles.

once again.....thanks to all...we are considering all possibilities and passing on the info...any more stuff will be appreciated also...hell,I wish I were going. by the way, the movie is supposed to be released in February....it is called "killing the matador" - not for theaters, as far as we know, will be released as an attachment to surfing magazine......we shall see...should be fun footage.

Cuando? The months of your visit are of greatest importance! Summertime swells do not favor our coastline for wave shape. Cerritos Beach and area has rentals as well as Pescadero. Many places like San Pedrito Surf Hotel (hate the name) are closed for low season. Cheap is $35 to $50 bucks a nite for economical rooms. Camping is free. Close to the beach is walking distance with view of the waves. I'd go with BFS cause his place hits all the bullseyes & is a Nomad! :cool: Good choice of party venues. Suerte. Tio

The latest scuttlebutt that I heard is that the San Pedrito Surf Hotel was bought out by Rancho Pescadero and will be raised for a more swanky place to be built in it's place. If you want cheap, go with Casa Sympatica, a block south of the Surf Hotel and probably less than $20 bucks a nite on a weekly basis.

I can't stand it when I hear a perfectly good place is going to be razed in order to build a place so expensive few can afford it and the overall quality ends up being mediocre.

If the rumor is true about the surf hotel, it's replacement will be a class act -- and attracting many tourists, totally changing the landscape and the neighborhood. Probably be noisy too. Too bad.

San Pedrito Surf Hotel was purchased by Rancho Pescadero.
And they will be raising the place soon.

The rest? You mean Cerritos?

I'm thinking you don't know the Pedrito beach area. It's not possible to ''gate'' the beach as access is not a problem.

It's a matter of time before the former Pedrito RV park is sold -- it's been on the market for years. Condos and time share is on the horizon for this Point break.

The problems will be the 20 site RV park on one side of Uncle Tom and a hotel in front of him. The RV park especially will turn this place upside down. It'll all make Cabo Extreme look like geriatrics. Ah, to have the old days back.

For those in the area, hotel, pool and bar will be off limits to everyone except guests.

Bet it's quiet on the mountain.

You are correct in your assumptions, Lee. I have not driven the area much, however, the seven roads I HAVE driven ended up with a locked gate in order to access the beach. And that time I did not have my FJCruiser.

I do need to spend more time in the area and see what is available (surfing and camping) between Pescadero and Mag Bay. I do promise not to divulge any insider surf spots, just like I did with the fishing spots in the east cape.

Hotel Casa Tota wasn't overly expensive, but nor was it "budget", per se. It's a new boutique hotel in a perfect location just off the main drag.

There are many new inexpensive hotels in the cerritos area Mayan village, las Tortugas, a few more i don't know the names of. All very new and all look very reasonable The surf camp in Pescadero is great if your on a budget as well
