"Stuck In The Middle Again"

DavidE - 7-12-2012 at 11:34 AM

If you were literally "In the middle"

And wanted to shop at COSTCO, Sam's Club, Soriana, and La Comerical

Would you head for Ensenada in September

Or Cabo San Lucas

In a small car that gets 30 mpg

??????

Mula - 7-12-2012 at 11:40 AM

Ensenada.

I think the Cabo Costco is expensive. - Geared to their clientele.

Osprey - 7-12-2012 at 11:57 AM

The rich gringos in Los Cabos or the rich Mexicans in Los Cabos?

You might be right. They might keep their prices high to keep out the riff and of course, the raff.

Sure would like to find a poor people's Costco.

despite NAFTA the Costcos here in Canada are more expensive than the one in Ensenada including goods produce localy.

How 'bout shopping at the local corner grocery? No telling what you'll find and it's way more fun. ;D

Ensenada

bajaguy - 7-12-2012 at 12:46 PM

Weather wise, Ensenada.

Shop, hang out, meet Nomads........

Plus we have a good selection of stores.

You will find "Kirkland"

It always amazes me to visit a Baja mercado- like in LABay, and see all the Kirkland products on the shelf.

The entire paper products section of the tienda up by the water works was Kirkland a couple months back,

And almost always Kirkland bottled water for sale,

Does not say a whole lot for the wholesale distribution biz in Baja

Durrellrobert..my Canadian friends were in Cabo last week and bought some Nike tennis shoes for the 15 year old son (at the mall), guess they were cheaper than buying them in Alberta!

I don't think anywhere is more expensive then Alberta.
My so -inlaw just bought a case of 48 locally brewed Moson beers that were on sale at Costco for $75.

rhintransit - 7-12-2012 at 07:09 PM

got ac?

Lee - 7-12-2012 at 07:10 PM

The prices at Costco Cabo reflect prices for being that far South.

I shop there and can tell you some prices are higher (cost of doing business in Cabo) and some prices are not.

It helps to know Costco prices.

BCS in September? Forgetaboutit.

It's a fact.

I'd rather shop in Cabo than in an Alberta COSTCO, way better prices and more interesting selection. Kirkland is often on the shelf in East Cape mercados, too. Home Depot and the other box stores are interesting and Soriana is fun. But not much beats a good ferreteria when I'm down south, except those vendors who walk the streets with their household wares and home decor on their backs.

Bajaboy - 7-12-2012 at 07:52 PM

David, most of our neighbors go to Ensenada at least once a month. Maybe you could pitch in some gas money and have them pick up some items for you. U2U me if you want some contacts but Ensenada seems to be a common destination for many locals in BA.

AmoPescar - 7-12-2012 at 08:39 PM

ISN'T THAT WHAT WALMART IS??

Bajajorge - 7-13-2012 at 09:56 AM

Of course Kirkland stuff would be more expensive in Baja. First it gets imported to the USA from Mexico by Costco, then it is sent back from USA to Baja for sale in Baja Costcos. They pay import taxes both north and south bound and then back again.:wow: :lol::?:

Osprey - 7-13-2012 at 10:27 AM

I say it's just wrong to pay that much for those double/triple taxed high-priced goods way down here in Baja Sur where they had to be trucked/ferried/flown so far to market. I don't buy any of that high priced stuff. I don't buy anything.

Boy I sure miss some of those high priced things. Sigh.....

David, that is a very good suggestion. There are people from BA going back and forth to Ensenada all the time and they would probably very much appreciate some help with gas money.

The Costco in Ensenada definitely does not carry everything that the Costcos NOB carry and most things are more expensive, but the things are already in Mexico.

woody with a view - 7-13-2012 at 10:45 AM

good idea, Zac. i'm sure a 500 peso note would do the trick.

it sure beats putting your own gas in your own car and driving for 20 hours RT.

Udo - 7-13-2012 at 11:02 AM

Isn't there a COSTC in La Paz?

That is 100 miles closer than Cabo, isn't it?

Mula - 7-13-2012 at 11:40 AM

No Costco in LaPaz. City Club and Sam's.
City Club is cheaper anyway.

Lengua - 7-13-2012 at 11:55 AM

sounds like you could go to Walmart or Sriana in La Paz ? Whu not those to stores .closer than Cabo or Ensenada...

tiotomasbcs - 7-13-2012 at 12:36 PM

DE, your little compact is too small to shop at Costco. Minimum needed is a van or pickup!:O Don't forget to factor in refrigerated items? Maybe you could start the business in BA for the other expats & locals! Just think MMmmm Arrachera, salmon, cheeses, liquor, etc. Oh yeah, you'll need a freezer at home. I would head al norte. Tio

DavidE - 7-13-2012 at 12:47 PM

Sigh, I need a Freightliner with automatic transmission, that gets 30 mpg, and squeezes down to five feet in width to fit past oncoming KenMex big rigs. Yeah! With a sleeper, and microwave, and Wi-FI. Hydraulic life gate. Refrigerated.

But the little car packs a lot of stuff if you do it patiently chinese-puzzle style. I just hauled a quarter ton of esterico and river bottom soil in a couple of weeks ago.

The only way to transport refrigerated stuff safely down here is to put it in zip loc bags and brine freeze it, hard.

And then. And then...

I look in my billfold

(sigh)

watizname - 7-14-2012 at 09:02 AM

David, that new guy, Joey is going to be peddliing back up after he drops off the seal in Cabo, and his cart may be empty. Why don't you ask him to bring you some stuff up.:biggrin:
