Heading down to Gonzaga...usually gather up wood stateside and just pack it the truck along with other camping gear...last trip, we were questioned

I wonder if it is available along either Hwy 2 or Hwy 3 in one of the many convenience stores as you travel through the highlands.
I organized a 4WD run several years ago, and my friend 'CG' saw a downed tree and went to work on it with a small hatchet - he drove to the Laguna

Ive been turned around at the border for firewood and for lumber (couple pieces) both diferent times

I always bring down at least 3 nights worth of firewood on my San feiipe/Gonzaga trips. I pack the logs in boxes as to be a little more discrete
just in case. Never been questioned. The boxes make for good kindling also. More room on way back.
My last trip I actually stored complete ready to light fires in arrowhead water boxes from Costco. They pack well in suv. Just filled with paper and

pack it in a flat single layer on the bed of the truck. pack your coolers on top of it and the rest of your "must have" stuff that you mostly never
use. make sure you can't see it so when they look in it looks like the Sanford & Son truck on a camping trip.

The only wood you will find to burn is from one of the lumber yards in town. They will sell you junk pieces ....just tell them "firewood".
I pack firewood from Ca to SF regardless. Lay it flay, not to past the wheel wells. Stack your gear up top of that. The military check points couldn't
care less about your wood.

I have purchased wood at the big mercado in El Rosario. The one that you would crash into if you didn't make the big left turn once passing Mama's.

in a pinch the big, dead agave burn spectacularly well. just watch out for the critters trying to escape!

The dead agave are nice cause you can peel off one or 2 leaves at a time and keep the fire going a good long while. smells nice too.
Woody is right about the critters (scorpions) coming out
Those surf boards look like they would burn just fine
