More from the Friendship Park Fandango

As Ken said, I was burning up my CD cards when he arrived. And so was John. Here are a few of the pictures taken by John and me.

One participant told us that fandangos can at times last all night and even longer. The Son Jarocho music and dance from Southern Vera Cruz is fun, emotional, and there is no definite end for any song --- it depends. The singing back and forth across the border was great and even with the thicker mesh wire that is now on the fence, the connections were still there.

The singing is full of emotion.

This young lady closed her eyes often while singing

The dancing is done on a small wooden platform -- two dancers at a time and the dancers change without interruption in the music. The same thing was happening on the other side. And at times, there would be only one dancer on each side of the border --- they were dancing with each other.

Special shoes are needed.

She has spent a lot of time in Vera Cruz learning and is definitely a part of the local group.

She was very serious playing her jarana --- most played the jarana, some also sang, and many also danced.

And the sound from the quijada made from a donkey jaw was quite unique and good.

And while he was playing the quijada he seemed to be connecting with this young lady playing the jarana.

Some of the connections through that fence

Standing in no man's land

On the other side of the other fence

And at the end of the day, we were as tired as this little guy.

Sorry for so many pictures---- it was just a really special event. It has been a long time since we have been in Vera Cruz--- maybe we need to go back.

And we always enjoy running into Ken.

I do want to go back even though I know it has changed so very much in the last 20 years. Last time we were there we rode a city bus out to Mocambo and it was in the boondocks---beautiful spot where we ate lunch and it was great. I think that area is now quite developed?? I loved that chicken bus as it was one where we could see the road through some of the rusted out floor in the front.

This music tradition is like many other Mexican musical traditions where often the participants are taught at the same time the performance is happening.

Many years ago, we watched the same thing with a group of Mariachis in Tonala --- the experienced were teaching the others as they performed.
