does anyone have personal experience with dental implants in baja, preferably close to the U.S. border in california ?

i have read there are dental practices in tijuana and mexicali and i am wanting personal testimonials regarding your experience and what advice you may have.

Yes, I have had one put in by Dra. Luz Marina in Ensenada. She is fantastic. The new technique is to take out the bad tooth and immediately place another one in. She knows her stuff!! There is a little pain after the surgery, but only lasts a few hours and goes away with the anti-inflammatories. If you can get a Dr. in the US to give you some good meds, all the better. Tell her Dra. Janene the gringo sent you.

Hmmmmmmmmm!?!?!? I just went thru a USA implant ($4,300) and it took almost 6 months to complete, what with the healing time after the install of the "post" (3 months) and the actual making and mounting of the crown (another 3 months approx). Everything is just fine now.

Barry, I am talking about the initial placing of the implant. I am still waiting to put the crown in about 6 months after.

The San Diego Union Tribune ran a feature story about dental implants a couple of months ago.

There are several different types of implants, as well as viable alternatives. It may help your decision if you know what type of implant you need. Many, but certainly not all, require a bone graph to the jaw so that the screw has enough bone into which it can be anchored. In other words no lose screws

Implants on the upper jaw may require a sinus lift to accommodate the screw.

I've had 2 implants in the last 5 years both done NOB. Both required bone graphing and the first one required a sinus lift. (A pleasant by-product of the sinus lift is that I no longer have debilitating sinus headaches!!). The bone graphs require several months of developement before they're ready for the post to be implanted.

I have several employees and several friends who have all their dental work done in Tijuana, but they aren't doing implants. Everyone's mouth is different as is each implant since it is tailored to the problem in the patient's mouth. It might be helpful to get an opinion or two about what type of implant is recommended for your situation, or perhaps you already know. The more you know about the implant that is recommended for your mouth, the easier your decision will be. Your best bet is to look for an oral & maxialfacial surgeon.

Good luck and if it's any consolation, other than some minor discomfort and swelling after the tooth extraction and placement of the post, it's actually not a very painful process. Time consuming and annoying yes, but painful...not too much

Just want to comment on this...if you take the bad tooth out and place one in immediately there will be virtually no bone loss..that is the whole point of putting the implant in immediately.

There has to be enough bone to support the post being put in..they come in different sizes depending upon which tooth and where in your mouth. The need for a bone graph is not that uncommon on the upper jaw.

The bone loss may not have anything at all to do with how soon the tooth is extracted or not. Much of the bone loss may have occurred prior to the tooth deteriorating. Other factors affecting the need (or not) for a bone graph are genetics, age related bone loss, health and condition of the mouth and gums.

I have a casual acquaintance whose Mexican wife had several implants done in Morelia by their family dentist who was not an oral surgeon. In less than 2 years they all had either fallen out or had to be replaced (in Minnesota, where they had moved) because the implants had not been appropriately anchored into the jaw.

I have very good friends who also lived in Morelia (they have since moved to D.F.) and one of them had to have multiple implants as well. Hers were done by an oral surgeon who splits his practice between Morelia and DF. She did not need bone graphs and after 4 years hers are just fine.

Everyone's dental profile is different. What worked or you, or for me, may not be the most appropriate course of action for the OP.

The statement made by Kalypso is 100% accurate...this is a MAJOR surgery so please do your homework on whoever you choose north of the the border or south.

I have had about 12 root canals and 2 dental implants, done by two different dentists in Mexico. There IS a correlation between extracting teeth and bone loss. A significant amount of bone loss occurs after extracting teeth. I am not saying that I know it all about dental implants, but I have had absolutely no problem with my implants and have never had to have a bone graft. The first one the tooth had been extracted a few months before. Costs in the US for implants can run up to $10,000 each. Mine cost less than $2000 between the implant and the crown. The Doctora in Mexico has had years of implant experience, is specially trained and credentialed, and the Doctor I had put in my first implant graduated from the Implant program at Loma Linda University in California. I have had extensive work done on my teeth and researched it every step of the way. I know what I am talking about. Many times dentists will give you a line of BS to jack up the prices as well.

I agree with Kalypso and LosCabosbound, and know it to be fact. Having enough bone to support an implant varies with the individual, which includes their age, and health of the gums. Personally, I need implants, but must have bone grafts done for each and every one.

You might want to check the cost. Generally, the closer the to the border the more expensive they are. There appears to be testimonials you might want to ask some of the people their opinion. There is a Mexican Dental Association but they pretty much protect their own.
