Last November I stopped to help a Mexican family in a van that was out of gas. I drive a diesel truck, but attempted to siphon some gas from my boat.
Siphoning didn't work, so I gave him $20 pesos and some cookies and juice for the 4 kids.
He said he was on his way to Guerrero to work.
On the way back I saw him parked on the side of the road in Vizcaino. Didn't think much about it.
I was driving thru Catavina heading north saturday where I saw a van parked and the guy waved to me that he needed help. I pulled over and up walks
the same guy needing gas...
P-nche culero
I told him no and kept driving.
Sometime later about 50k south of El Rosario, I see a trailer and van on the west side of the road. A guy waves for help so I check my six and stop.
He asks if I have a 'cruzar de llanta' or something like that. Mi chapis translates it as a tire iron cross. Ahuevo, always carry that in my truck.
Never know what size lug you going to need it on and the torque is better than those pos tire irons. He only had the tire iron for his van and the
trailer lugs were smaller on the 13 inch wheel.
Get this; he'd been broke down for 3 hours and no one would stopped, 20 minutes the tire is changed - dulces por los ninos. He offers me a beer. The
women chat in rapid fire spanish. That's what baja is all about. 3 hours in the desert - wtf. That is why I detest that low-life user of good kind
acts of assistance.
saludos
My broken-down van story

I make it a point to stop and help ppl in need. On my way down San Matias Pass towards Hwy 5, I saw a family in a broken down van - several children
standing about on what was a 90 degree day - too hot for children standing outside for extended lengths of time.
The truck ran out of gasoline - I did not carry the Super Sypon that I carry now, but I did have a tow strap. I told the Man to get his family inside
of the van, and that I would pull them into San Felipe - wherever they wanted to go.
We traveled in tandem to the Hwy 3/Hwy 5 Military Checkpoint, where I explained to the Militares what was going on. I spoke with the Man about where
he wanted to go - The northernmost Pemex station in San Felipe. Roughly 1 hr. later, we pulled into the Pemex station, precisely where the man wanted
his van parked, etc. Everybody was happy.

i've stopped to help twice. once the guy had a hose and a 2 gallon can so i hooked him up. the other time we squeezed a guy in and he left 5-6 family
members by the road. we dropped him at Pemex in El Ros and left him smiling.

well, a month ago when we went to asuncion for a day for shrimp tacos and visits with many folks, we were on our way back when Les decides to go over
a little "hill" of sand. the Geo tracker got stuck right on the top of the hill...teetering back and forth ... no wheels touching for the 4 wheel
drive to kick in. As I sit there flabbergasted, a Mexican couple pull over (this is a pretty remote area), immediately offer to tie the geo to their
truck and with a major yank, pull us over the hump.
Need I say that I had urged hubby NOT to attemp going over the hill ?????
and I was so thankful that the mexicanos happened to come by so quickly after we got stuck. the desert sun is unforgiving.

Blanca, don't try to understand his lack of listening skills when sand dunes are close by. it's a guy thing.
like when we left your house the first day and i turned down the most logical sandy road trying to get down to our camp spot with the pop up on the
hitch. you know who said it wasn't the right turn but i was determined. well, she was right and we ALMOST got stuck trying to turn around at an arroyo
near the bottom......

"Don't wear your party dress to Baja.
Don't wear high heels when you're swimmin' in the sea.
Don't pick your teeth with spines of cactus.
but do help your neighbor who's in need!" ~ Mulegena

Blanca, take a moment a watch how little boys play in a sandbox, versus how little girls play. A light bulb blazes over your head.
