Baja Road Report - La Paz to Tecate

Angelos - 8-2-2012 at 03:33 PM

Leaving La Paz on 7/29 and arriving at the border 8/1 notable road conditions follow:

The border crossing at Tecate:

It's nice to be in cooler climate - now we just have to get past sticker shock at the diesel pump.

Thanks, good to know.

Yes, please post the list... scan it if possible. I got one about 10 years ago and have posted it here in the past. Interested to see if anything has changed.

Interesting....we crossed about three weeks ago and were specifically asked if we had dog food. Being that we don't have a dog, it wasn't a problem.

Glad you had a pleasant trip.

What I find interesting is that we cross with visible pet carriers and a pocket dog and I don't remember them ever asking us about pets at the Tecate crossing. We haven't been directed to secondary when we have had them with us so it would probably be a different story if we had.

I am leaving soon so the road report is much appreciated! Tecate passing was during the week? Read of a 5hour delay on a Sunday! Cuesta nDel Infierno sounds like a minor molestia, no? Thanks. Tio

I should have posted above that we are in a pickup truck pulling a 5th wheel. Also, we had two dogs with us - one we just adopted from the streets in La Paz. No papers were asked for. We volunteered our dog food, but were told we could keep it. Last time we crossed, dog food was confiscated without much regard for the fact that it was a US brand purchased at Sam's Club.

In answer to tiotomasbcs - we crossed yesterday (on a Wednesday) and entered the line at 3:40 pm. Hope that helps.

David K - when I break out my scanner, will provide an image of the document we were given.

Came from Mulege to San Quentin today (Thursday) road in great shape - work on the Santa Rosalia grade but no problem as even the dirt sections were well graded. Work north of Jesus Maria to the military check but no problem. I am driving a 2005 Toyota Tacoma so motor homes or folks towing trailers, etc may have a different opinion of the road. Will cross going north at Tecate tomorrow at around 11:00 AM and will give update. Jim

Dog food heading into the USA is prohibited. Got nailed 2 years ago and was flagged to secondary for the next 6 months.

As it always has been: Depends on the officer questioning you! I look forward to seeing the new list of restricted items at the border.
