Can't ask much more from Ensenada...

EnsenadaDr - 8-5-2012 at 04:09 PM

Today I was doing my last overnight shift at the clinic. I was talking to a Mexican computer repairman after my shift, because someone stole my charger for my computer last night. There were only three other people on the shift with me, so I pretty much have it narrowed down as to who it was, but that is a whole other story.

I mentioned my positve feelings about being so near the Mexican/American border. He is a local Ensenadense..born and raised here in Ensenada. He speaks perfect English. And some of the native Mexicans speak perfect English, and guess how they learned? By their own testimony, watching American cartoons. He also mentioned about living near the US. I chose to be in Ensenada because I never cared for the traffic, crime and congestion of Tijuana. Many would feel that to be a racist remark, but here was Mexico's own child telling me the very same thing. I love the hour proximity to the US border of Ensenada, but the city also has all the flavor and culture of true Mexico. Getting out of my house to walk on the beach 5 minutes away, or going out my back door to the freshest seafood ever, is wonderful. And the climate? Wow...you know climate has always been my pet peeve. When I first came to California over 20 years ago, in February, and it was 80 degrees, I knew this was the place for me. Yet I spent alot of freezing winters and sweltering summers in Connecticut and in Miami Beach to realize Baja Sur or Imperial Valley could never be my cup of tea. So yes, I have to say, Ensenada is my kind of town, not Chicago or New York, as Frank Sinatra once sang!!

I'm not sure which of these translations are proper for Ensenada:
¿están tirando de mi pierna?
¿Estás jalando mi pierna?
¿tira usted mi pierna?

Bob..seriously

STOP using this translator...the verb tirar, means to throw away...so you can eliminate that one...(two of the choices below) jalar...to pull would be the more likely choice...but in Spanish, they say, "Me estas tomando mi pelo?" which is the Spanish equivalent of are you pulling my leg, but literally it means, are you taking my hair?? all in all, means are you joking with me??

I heard the same thing about learning english from American cartoons from a vendor in Ensenada last week. I'm going to start watching Mexican cartoons while I have my morning coffee.

Actually, I hear that quite often. I've often wondered if it's a euphemism for, " I lived in the states for a while."

Speak English and speak to the world. Except of course, in parts of East London.

You can't learn anything after the age of 40. Though you can still have fun. Disclaimer: no estoy tomando tu pielo :)

cartoons are an excellent way to learn a language .... the grammatical structure is usually kept to the bare essentials. so, it is a great way to learn.

I was sitting at the bar near Piccadilly listening to a conversation in what must have been pure c-ckney. Couldn't understand a word.
