Hola amigos,
My wife and I are going to do some tourist type stuff in Tecate next Friday and we've never been there. I love pottery and art and my wife will find
all the clothing stores right off the bat. If any of you Nomads have great places to eat of must see or shop let me know. Many thanks

Try harder!

My Favorite taco place is across the street from McD's. "Los Amigos". They do Carne Asada right and they are very popular with the locals. Like Woody
says, head south on the main road toward Ensenada for pottery. I can't speak for clothing stores. Have fun.

Around the town square......look around. You'll find something you like.

Yep! The town square is a great place to hang out and have a frosty mug of Tecate on a hot summer day. Los Amigos is half a block away.

When you drive through the border (we walk from the US side but carrying pots back would be a drag) at the first street lights (intersection) look
east and on the corner is a fish taco shop but next to it is 'Panchos' with some killer carne tacos. Oscar is the owner but he is always at another
one of his stands now but the guy taking orders is his 'little' brother and the tortillas are hand made there...mmmmmm.
Visit the 'Bar Diana' on the west side of the Zocola! Have a Margarita and say hi to Abraham (usually behind bar). AC should be on and Ice is good in
the drinks...have 2 and your on your own! Tip well.
The food is ok at Jardines right in the Zocola but the tables outside are great for people watching. Lots of cheap tourist stuff around the Zocola.
You will see the brewery (and smell it) and you might want to walk around to have a look but it only does tours on weekends.
Walk east on the main drag and visit the panaderia 'Major', can't miss it and it's reallly big with to much good stuff.
On the north side of the main drag as you walk towards the Major from the Zocola you will see the old Caliente Betting Casino...just a few hundred
feet up the hill on that street on the same side is a Tamale place in a home with an open front and the big pots right there...excellent tamales...get
a few for your freezer at home.
If you drive futher east past the Major on the main drag there is more pottery shops also. Going south past the McDonalds is the Baseball stadium and
there use to be a artisinians shops building just past that but don't go to far as the stop signs going up the hill have become a haven for cops to
take your money.
Other than that...dress light, it is baking out there right now.

OH yea...the bar Diana has decent bathrooms...the public pay fors in the Zocola are marginal but the bathrooms at Ponchos are a good visit...as well
the Major has good bathrooms. Hey! I'm married! so I know.

I crossed back last Sun., noon, at Tecate, coming back from
Ensenada, just shy of 3 hr. in line, I could drive from
where I live in San Clemente to Ensenada quicker
than the time it took me to travel 1 1/2 mi in that line,
I think I'm at least going for the passcard for the ready
line

Be prepared for the heat. Predicted high for Friday is 108 degrees according to the TV

I like restaurant Cuatro Milpas. On boulevard leading to Ensenada. On the right side near the LPG plant (ZGAS). Authentic, solid chow.

Just to clarify the bakery name so you can't miss out, it is El Mejor Pan and it is excellent, a longtime Tecate legend. You can also get a nice cup
of coffee with your pan, still 24 hours a day I believe.
The Tecate brewery has a pleasant jardin, beer garden, which if open (till 3 pm last time I went), gives all comers a free can of TKT in a nice
pavillion. There are fine restrooms there and a little TKT beer gift shop. They used to serve you one draft beer--always free. I hope it's still open.

I think the best restaurant in Tecate is La Mision which is on the main st, heading west towards Tijuana on the outskirts of TEcate, On the left
side.
paranewbi - 8-7-2012 at 06:27 PM
Your right Bayrunner1...La Mision is good, try the bacon wrapped shrimp, ceasor salad and the tortilla soup!
To get there you can drive west on the main road or we take a taxi (5-6$) from the Zocola. Just tell the driver 'La Mission' he knows it. The when
thru just walk out front to the bus stop and wait for one of the old little busses to take you back to the Zocola, cheap and a little adventure.

Durrell, thanks the heads up, we were watching this heat wave, and we'll go next Friday, as that is my wife's day off..This Friday, mucho caliente.
I'll sit this one out. We're really looking forward to the trip and lunch at La Mission and so many other suggestion all the Nomads contributed.
Gracias.

So it's tomorrow right? Are you still going? If so, take pix and have fun. It'll be hot but sitting in the park with a cold Tecate in Tecate as a real
cool experience. Man, maybe I'll call in sick and go.
