fishing report, BOLA area

4baja - 10-21-2004 at 06:56 AM

the purpose of this trip was to get together 10 good friends and celibrate mu buddies 40th birthday, since we all have places down there now its easy to pack and hit the road with minimum packing. with my boat in tow and five other trucks we headed south to our favorite place in thew baja. arrived sunday and began the task of getting our boats ready for the following days of fishing, reels attached to poles, new fishing line, oil in the moters and gassing up the boats you know the drill. day one we decided to go to barnabes reef to the south, we came around the point and had some wind out of the south east wich became glassy at punta animas. as we approched barnabys we notice the mother ship tony reyes from san felipe doing her best to rape the reef, we slipped in between the pangas and and soon after double hook ups on yellows to 12 pounds. both boats put on 5 fish apiece and decided to catch and release for the next two hours. the next day me and my buddy phill decided to hit the 7 mile reef to the north, with both boats gassed up we hit full throttle in glassy seas. david a was ahead of us as he new we would catch up with our faster boats, the water was pure glass and 79 degrees with bonita jumping on the north of smith. i parked my boat there for a wide open bonita bite on iron for around three hours when i get a call from dave that he scored a dorado. we went on the troll looking for them but nothing but bonita, all is good. day three we took a break and rode ATVS to the copper mine, all of our arms needed the break. day four we fished barnabes again and the first drop brought in a 20 pound yellow and some trigger. we headed south to another reef and found dorado but no takers. we through every think at them but only followers, time for a beer. day 5 we headed to 7 mile reef because we heard that the white sea bass were happening and our buddy rick loves the bass. we started dropping down 225 feet for nothing the first hour so we moved over to deeper water. my first drop down i got hooked up to a 20 pound yellow, it was deep and took a while to get it in. while gaffing the fish i noticed rick hooked up so i pilled up next to himand dropped to 250 feet. got hit on the drop and battled it while wathing risk gaff a nice 30 pound white sea bass, i brought in a 26 pounder shortly after. on the way back we saw a marlin jump out of the water between me and phills boat and allso noticed a fin back whale. a great trip down with great friends made this a great trip. we will be doing it again next year!

We'll be taking our two 6 month old kids down on Christmas day for a week to 10 days. Kind of a maiden voyage for the new family holiday tradition. How soon will you be draggin' your rugrat down?

It's never to early !!

Fresh white seabass on the grill--yum yum yum. Nice report steve, sounds like you hit it just right with calm weather and lots of fish. I just got back to san diego and will hang here until thanksgiving then head south with a few turkey sandwiches in the cooler and will swing into bola and see whats happening. When will you be back down there? fishin rich

Steve 4Baja always come back with the best catch in camp. They gave us a batch of yellow that we marinated then smoked up and passed around. Tasty stuff. We even smoked a skipjack. Even then it's hard to like skipjack.
