chicken feet

willardguy - 8-27-2012 at 10:22 AM

anyone eat these things? I was in the calimax yesterday and talked to a guy that was buying a dozen packages. turns out he cooks em up for his dogs, says they just love em.
I saw some pretty involved asian recipes but what do the locals do with em?:?:

I went to a Chinatown SF restaurant with one of my development partners, a prominent SF Chinese gentleman.

He ordered chicken feet, they came in a soup bowl with some broth.

He told me to try them "Very excellent" says he...
His son is sitting across the table, vigorously shaking his head in a negative manner.

So, being the good trooper that I am, I dutifully took one "Just suck off the skin" says my guy, "Very tasty"

So I did...

Know what it tasted like????

CHICKEN FEET!!!! Just like you would imagine after a lifetime of stomping around the pen.

UUGH/YUCK

never again, the son was right on....

I feel the same way about Pig's Feet. You know where they've been all it's life.

Ah, but the part just above the feet, the hock, is fantastic roasted. The Germans call it Schweinshaxe.

You can also cook it this way.

One of my preschool students, Larry, brought chicken feet for lunch last year. This is the conversation I overheard as he took off the lid....

Child to his left, looking over Larry's shoulder said, "Oooh. What is that?"

Larry, "I don't know."

Now two more children are looking at Larry's lunch.

Child on the left, " They could be... monster feet."

Larry, "Yeah, monster feet."

Now all six of the children at Larry's table are staring at Larry's lunch.

Another child, "What do monster feet taste like?"

Larry takes a foot in his hand, takes a small, teeny tiny bite off of a toe and says,

"Monster tastes like chicken."

I asked him if he would like his monster feet heated in the micro. He did.

Heated monster feet smell like chicken too.

Chicken feet make some bad/good ju-ju if you're into voodoo!

güero - 8-28-2012 at 09:30 PM

At our house the gizzards, hearts and necks never make it to the table, (cooks treat). I love the feet but no one else will touch them so they get saved for last. Fried or BBQ'd, the're great. I just like to pull the tip with the toenail off. For some reason that nail isn't appealing. The liver goes to the dog or cats if I cook it, if not, the trash.

willardguy - 8-28-2012 at 10:16 PM

what part do you eat? do you just gnaw off the skin or can you chew em up, bone and all?

The necks are bone and all since the bone is soft. The feet is just knawing the skin off as the bones in the feet are pretty hard. I do like the feet well done and crispy! The rest of the chicken, moist and tender.

This is just plain uncivilized and disgusting. :barf:

yes i like livers and rumaki, but gizzards.....too weird.
anyway deep fried hearts and c-cktail sauce are the bomb.

it cracked me up when you buy those whole frozen chickens in mulege and they package the feet. I was told to deep fry them and eat like pork cracklins. The grossed out mi esposa. hahaha.

MitchMan - 12-12-2012 at 05:02 PM

I see packaged chicken feet at the Walmart in La Paz all the time. Never knew exactly what people did with them or how they were prepared or eaten. Now I know.

Don't think I can do that. Not being judgmental as I love menudo, pigs feet pickled or stewed, chicken backs, livers and gizzards.

Whenever I prepare cooked chicken (barbecued or fried), I never encounter any competition when I lay claim to the neck, the liver, the gizzard and the back. No gringo I know has ever eaten those pieces with one exception. A high school chum and his large family (all blue eyed Germans) lived in Africa as Christian missionaries for 12 years. They saw and ate many things. Had him over for a chicken barbecue and we secretly shared the 'delicacies' out of sight of our wives and other friends.

When I worked at the Jolly Roger Restaurants, we had a southern guy who was the kitchen manager and he used to make chicken livers and/or chicken gizzards in chicken gravy over white steemed rice as occasional daily specials. Many people loved it. Me too.

Gizzards are my favorite, love the hearts also and the liver is good too. Have eaten the feet in Asian restaurants in the San Gabriel valley and liked them very much.

Chickens don't wear shoes, Jim, so you do know where those feet have been....right??
