Dog food at Tecate

boe4fun - 8-27-2012 at 05:08 PM

Hola, We crossed with a friend at Tecate on Aug. 10th and (2) 50 lb. bags of Pedigree dog food that she was taking down to her dad was confiscated by the "Sargarpa" who presented us with receipts. They also took a bunch of home grown veggies, storebought potatoes, etc. Didn't mind losing our veggies, but our friend Michelle had spent about $100 bucks on the dog food. When I told my buddy about it in Bahia Asuncion he said when he had come through the same POE a couple of weeks prior he had no problem bringing in several large bags of dog food, so it sounded to him like the Capitan's wife told him to bring home some dog food that night! Anyway, be forewarned.

Thanks for the info. Interestingly, when we returned to the US the last two years we declared our dog food. The first year we went to secondary, talked with the ag guy, he saw the food originated in the US, said no problem. Last year we declared dog food to the man in the kiosk and he said they were told not to worry about dog food, a change from previous years. Sooo....now we can deal with Mexico? Always an adventure. (The dog food in question is a specially ordered prescription dog food certainly not available in Mexico). December 1, San Ysidro to La Paz, will report if a similar problem.

There may be something currently agitating Mexico aduana that can be attributed to the US. When that happens, they tend to us a "Tit For Tat" enforcement schedule at the Port of entry. In other words, they mimic the procedures of the US Customs which, in this case is "No Pet food allowed."
A similar instance is the topic of another current thread, that of requiring Health certification for pets entering Mexico.
These inconveniences seem to come and go and I doubt it will last long.
