I love to see old photos of Bahia, to look in the background of the shot and remember back when the town looked like that. Open spaces. Simple.

Thanks Ken.

Thank you Paulina. It sure is different, isn't it?? I love these old ones also. This was in January of 79. Back then every January Pam and I would do a Baja runaway. We would usually start at Punta Pescadero or Las Arenas and work our way north with stops at Loreto, Mulege, San Francisquito, Bahia and Meling (I forgot Meling:))

Thanks David. That's when the runway was the main street and you could taxi right up to your room at Casa Diaz.

Boy, I sure remember that. The trike in the photo was a nice homey touch, to. Tho I never flew in, I sure saw a lot planes there in the early and mid-70's, many being my friends--------you could taxi right up within 20 feet of your motel room door-----that always was so cool!!!

Great shot, Ken.

Well, the plane IS tied down to avoid premature takeoff.

Pre-run in 1973 we drove down the main street (also the runway) parked in front of Diaz' and had a great turtle steak dinner.
Drove north just past the end of the runway and camped for the night in the sand,
up early and down toward SF and El Arco.
Great memories
especially the turtle steak!!!

I remember those days before the Diaz runway was closed... In fact, on our first trip to L.A. Bay in 1967, there were more planes in front of the cabins than automobiles. My next trip was in 1974, and the new road was built into town from Hwy. 1, but not yet paved. Papa Diaz was still going strong... 1976 was our next time and stayed at the new government trailer park... road only had about 3 miles of asphalt then... The next three times ('82, '84, '85) the road had been paved, but so thin it was already full of pot holes.

Larry Hahn has a lot of diaz pics from his flights in the 50s too at his bajadreams website if it is still active.
His son Jerry had his 206 stolen from baja a few years ago.

haven't heard from Larry and his Aztec in a while, he used to post on BBP.

His web site is still up http://www.bajadreams.com and the page with the old L.A. Bay photos is here: http://www.bajadreams.com/flybaja.htm

Larry Hahn and Capt. Mike were the two pilots who flew their planes to the airport here in Oceanside for my Viva Baja #3 party, in 2002.
