Items to carry on a Baja 4x4 trip

As a Baja 4WD enthusiast that has covered many miles in the Baja backcountry, I have compiled this list of equipment and components to make your backcountry trip more feasible.

Items you should consider:

Rear locking differential
31" (or greater) LT All-Terrain or Mud-Terrain tires
Spare tire of equal size
Tow strap (w/o the metal hooks - these can separate, swing, and maim!)
Monotube shocks
HiLift Jack + HiLift Base (sold separately)
On-board Air Compressor (w/Tire repair kit)
Clinometer
Oil pan skid plate
Radiator skid plate
Baling Wire
Duct Tape
SAE and Metric wrenches and sockets
Metal (or Rotopax) Gas Can (w/sypon AND spout)
Spare fuses, coolant, Stop Leak (for Radiator/Water Pump)

I don't carry a SPOT, because I don't have anyone that will;

1. Come to Baja for recon

or

2. Has the vehicle capable of pulling me out of the area I would be hopelessly stuck in.

It's best to go with at least one other vehicle. I had to pull a Jeep out of Mission Sta. Maria, and I have the damaged tires to prove it. I was encouraged to stay there alone, but I chose to drive to Hwy 1 without a backup plan.

HOLA, on any trip..I bring, water,dogfood,beer,JB weld,T.P...super glue...and BEER !!K&T :cool:

..oops!! I forgot the mex credet card (siphon hose) got a have that when out there!!!!! :lol:

I would suggest for Jeeps or other vehicles with similar link type steering systems to bring some angle iron U bolts in case a link breaks. They would also be helpful on tie rod links. After my Death Valley trip with John M I now carry them. Also some welding rods and a pair of welding goggles would be helpful.

I was just thinking about that over the weekend. I was also thinking about how 11 years have flown by. You were very enthusiastic about me joining this forum in 2003 after Amigos de Baja closed shop.

This weekend, Leidys and I were in San Diego/San Ysidro recovering from the heat and choking smog, and I thought today while walking on Coronado Island how much the beach (near The Coronado Island Hotel) felt so much like a nice area in Baja, minus the border crossing hassles. We took dozens of photos which I plan to post here tomorrow. Leidys and I decided to come to the San Diego area instead of the LA and OC beaches since it is a more relaxed environment.

Was it #3 in Oceanside? I do remember we didn't have any PA for #2 in an Clemente as Ken didn't bring it.

After going to San Phelepe to my house for the weekend, I think you may need the SPOT between La Ventana and south.

I had a side wall blow out during July 4th trip. :lol:

Bummer on the blowout! Hope you got back home to Fenix A-OK!

In July, the 20 mile detour was not bad, at all... La Ventana to the gold mine, La Fortuna... then back a couple weeks later.
