AAA maps

thebajarunner - 8-29-2012 at 08:01 PM

Per the recent discussion of availability of Baja Maps....

Went into our local AAA to check on some insurance issues,
on the way out asked for a Baja Map.

Had a drawer full- handed over a nice shiny one (you can always tell the ones that have made a trip south in your truck, they are a bit bent up)

anyway, it is dated 2/10.

Still in print, still available, at least in Modesto.

I picked up two in Bend Oregon last Monday at the AAA office

The newest I have seen is dated 2003/2010. It has kayaks on the cover . The previous one is dated 2003/2007 and has San Felipe's lighthouse on the cover.

Same one as you describe

I had picked up the date off the back URL code

The legend shows same date as your with Yaks on the cover.

Open it and look at the bottom of the legend, just left of Cabo San Lucas. Just below the mileage and kilometer bars is the copyright date.

The last full update was 2003 and there have been reprintings with minor updates in 2004, 2007 and 2010... all three have both years showing.

The San Felipe lighthouse cover is not the newest.

The 2004 issue has beach palapas on the cover.

The 2003 issues has kayaks on the beach and is a zoom in and slightly different photo than used for 2010.

The 2001 issue has The Arch at Cabo San Lucas on the cover.

The 2000 issue was the last one with the Baja peninsula on the cover.

I recently picked up two maps at our local AAA office in San Luis Obispo. I don't know what edition they were as I gave them to friends in Bahia Asuncion, but the local AAA office had a lot of them.

I would love it if some one could send me a new map, one thats dated 2/10 I would gladly pay for the cost of sending

Discover Baja and Baja Books and Maps both (used to) sell the AAA Baja map... maybe ask them which edition... There is very little changes in them the past three editions. The 2007 added the Corredor 2000 and Libramente de Mexicali, not shown on the 2004 map.

Does AAA still send panel trucks with cartographers into the back-country recording new roads?

AAA stopped making any maps

Dennis
Think you must have missed that dialog
They announced a few years back that they were no longer in the map making biz,
Probably due to GPS, MapQuest, Google, etc.
But, they will continue to publish and distribute, just not "create'
Dick

p.s. to the Cpl
your map(s) will be in the mail manana
;D

DENNIS - 8-30-2012 at 04:48 PM

Thanks, Dick.
I remember seeing their cartography caravans down here. I'll hang on to the memory.

AAA maps were esential when I had a diesel, showed the Pemex locations and which had diesel.

I went to the AAA office here in Bend Oregon today because they had given me a couple of 07 maps last week. I mentioned that the newest was an 2010 map. they called the head office and found out that they had old maps, the next call was to order the new maps and they were told that they would have the new maps in Bend by Sept. 6th.

David K - 8-31-2012 at 09:12 AM

It was the Auto Club of Southern California (ACSC) who mapped Baja since the 1920's... they are associated with AAA. The newest editions started putting AAA International Series on the map...

It will be sad to not have new mapping done in Baja by them.

Just taking a quick look between the 2007 and 2010 printings, I see no changes made...

There were changes made on the 2007 printing over the 2004, however (Corredor 2000, Libramente de Mexicali, Observatory road pavement added, Puertecitos road all paved again).

What has happened since 2007, but not shown on 2010 (get out your pencils):

North of El Tigre (on Free Road) to Guadalupe paved road.
Ejido Erendira road all paved.
Observatory road all paved.
Pavement and new grading south of Puertecitos.
Graded road north from Santa Rosalillita to nearly Punta Blanco.
Graded road to Santa Gertrudis road from near Piedra Blanca (parallel to the blue line of Arroyo Purificacion on map).
Paved road into Bahia Asuncion completed.
Paved road towards Bahia Tortugas from Asuncion jcn.
Paved road partly to San Francisco de la Sierra.
Paved road into Punta Abreojos completed.
Paved road south partly to Laguna San Ignacio.
Paved road north to geothermal plant and 'hotel' Las Tres Virgenes.
Paved road from Las Barrancas north to San Juanico (Scorpion Bay).
Paved road towards Comondu from Francisco Villa.
Paved road almost to San Javier from Loreto.
4 lane highway to almost Todos Santos from San Pedro/La Paz.
4 lane highway from south of Todos Santos to Cabo San Lucas.
