BODY SHOP / RESTORE 1978 CADILLAC

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 8-30-2012 at 06:27 PM

Hola,

need a restoration body shop.

my mechanic wants to restore a 1978 cadillac coupe de ville.

it has surface rust on the roof and has ( cancer ) rust that went through just under the rear windshield but the entire width.

all chrome to be removed and rechromed and remounted.

also, is there one of the same to be found in a yonke with a good body ? how easy would it be to import it to california ?

i thank you for your input.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

78 caddy....dont waste your money...no value

rust can never be completely fixed...

if you cut it off...the "real" value is decreased

sell it and buy a real classic:light:

dizzyspots - 8-31-2012 at 06:06 AM

dittoes....if it WAS perfect...late 70's Caddies = zero collector
value

DavidE - 8-31-2012 at 07:57 AM

To furnish info and not opinion...

The only chrome plating shops that I am aware of are in Tijuana. There used to be one in Mexicali, years ago but maybe not now.

Because of warping, many body men either braze or solder in new sections of metal. Those years of Cadillacs had a lot of problems with corrosion either under the landau top or just below it.

Caddies are pretty scarce in México because parts are so hard to get. The drive train was pretty much unique and if you check with a refraccionaria an auto parts store you will find little more than filters and spark plugs and maybe not even those.

Scrap metal yards are called "CHATARRAS" used auto parts yards "YONQUEROS" the spelling may vary.

BODY SHOP / RESTORE 1978 CADILLAC
You are not looking for someone to RESTORE your car since you only want to get rid of rust, repaint and rechrome.

RESTORATION means everything is diassembled, the frame repainted and everthing else replaced, or at least brought up to like-new standards including the upholstery.

Any body and paint shop can do what you are asking. There is a guy just off the road between Maneadaro and La Bufadora that specializes in this. Forgot his name but if you are heading towards La Bufadora his long driveway is lined with palm trees on both side and is just before the bridge.

A lot of people fix up cars that are called Orphan Cars, Jay Leno being one. I have done a few. when I choose a project my main concern is not to meet one just like it coming at me on the road.

I know of a restoration shop in TJ. They take cars all apart down to the frame and put them back together. They work like I used to before I retired.

My motto was "I may be slow, but I sure am expensive."

The last time I was in the neighborhood they were rebuilding a '59 Chevy 2 door hardtop - very cool.

Let me know if you want to go the expensive route.

Is This what you want it to look like?

durrelllrobert - 8-31-2012 at 10:08 AM

Restoration cost over $23k

Nemo55 - 8-31-2012 at 10:25 AM

You can pick that same car up in Vancouver in 8/10 condition for about $1500 easy.
I had one about nine years ago i bought for $500 and it was an eight out of ten for sure.

I should qualify that statement by saying,,no visible rust,,unrestored driveable clean condition.

I had a 72- 74-and 79 each one was progressively worse I never bought another one.:no::no::no:

durrelllrobert - 8-31-2012 at 11:33 AM

i had a 1946 convertable. It was given to me for cleaning out the garage for the widow of one of my coworkers at China Lake. Even came with a spare engine and only need a new top and upholstery. I sold it for $500 to a guy from Texas Instruments who jumped in it and drove to Texas just the way it was. I think that today it would bring around $60k.
Bodystyles Average Sale
Convertible Coupe $65,525
Sedan $7,000

Mine was yellow with a green top

Ensenada Yonkes

bajaguy - 8-31-2012 at 02:49 PM

Or is it Yonkies????

Hey, Rat............

From Ensenada, take Hwy 3 toward San Felipe...as you are leaving the main area of Ensenada and climbing the hill, there are 3 or 4 GIANT auto wrecking yards (Yonkes or Scrappers) along the highway........they might have what you are looking for.........it seems they have everything else.

And I think you will have a bucket full of problems trying to get that beast imported into the US......YMMV

It's really easy in Ensenada most of the Yonke places are hooked up on a HOT LINE like in the U.S. it eliminates a lot of wasted time looking around.

J.P. - 8-31-2012 at 03:12 PM
