I've recently mounted a 1986 40 hp Evinrude outboard I bought last month and it tilts really hard (manual tilt). I've repeatedly lifted and reset the
motor and it's not freeing up. I suspect the grease in the tilt tube is dried and hardened. I tried adding more grease and the grease fitting appears
to be clogged.
A couple of questions.
How do I fix this, can the fitting be removed and cleaned?
I imagine the whole assembly can be disassembled and cleaned but for obvious heavy and bad back reasons, I prefer not to go that route.
If I buy new fittings, what size/type do I buy and who would sell them?
Thanks

Before going thru all the expense and effort to replace the tilt mechanism I'd try to clean it out 1st.
Remove the zirk fittings and clean them out if you can or replace them. Then fill an empty grease tube from a grease gun with WD-40 and squirt under
pressure into the cleaned out or replaced zirk fittings. Also squirt the WD-40 from the can around any opening to get to the dried grease. Gravity
will slowly let the WD-40 seep deeper into the affected part of the motor. You need to get the WD-40 to dissolve the dried grease in the tilt
mechanism. Just keep injecting and spraying WD-40 into the tilt mechanism, tilting the motor up and down until it frees up. Place a pan under the
motor to catch the dissolved grease drippings. It could take days of effort to slowly dissolve the dried grease.
As far as finding a replacement of the zirk fittings it depends on where you are located. NOB or Mexico? Remove a fitting and take it to an
automotive or marine hardware store for a comparison.
WD-40 is one of the greastest inventions of mankind.

WD-40 is certainly good stuff but I googled aerokroil and it looks like it might be better for this job. That's the kind of tip I was looking for.
I'll probably have more questions once I try to start the motor. I keep the boat near Ensenada and will be using it only infrequently in Baja, so I'm
determined to become my own mechanic.
Right is tight, left is loose. What else do I need to know?
Any maintenance suggestions are welcome.

The mechanic I bought it from said he did that.
I have Buddy Bearings on the trailer hubs. Are those zerks and the ones on the motor different sizes? My Buddy Bearing grease gun seemed to fit
loosely on the motor zerks. Thre was some resistance when putting the gun on the zerks though.

OFF S.S. ZERK'S WITH A PASSION....larryC - 8-31-2012 at 04:01 PM
The zerks on your outboard are probably the same size as the zerks on your trailer but the threaded hole that the zerks are threaded into may be
different. Remove them and compare the thread sizes, a common size is 1/8" male pipe thread and another is 1/4"x 28 thread. An automotive zerk will
work as a temporary fix and then get a SS zerk from a marine place when you get a chance.
Good luck
