NEW BOOK: The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California.

David K - 9-7-2012 at 07:04 PM

If you have been following the thread in the Nomad Historic Interests and Literature forum, you know that Max, Erline and I have been working on a new book that will provide the basic details and some background history on the California Missions.

All 48 of California's missions are included, from the first mission at Loreto in 1697, then those throughout the peninsula of California (now known as Baja California), and then the Franciscan missions (mostly in Alta California) and Dominican missions of northern Baja California, to the last California mission founded in 1834, at Guadalupe. Missions Guadalupe and Solano were both founded after Mexico won its independence from Spain, so they are 'Mexican missions', rather than 'Spanish missions'.

Each of the missions are an important part of California's history (Baja & Alta). Since that was the case, we treat each mission with equal importance and they are listed in chronological order, and numbered 1-48. Missions are easy to look up being listed in the book's contents, index and they are on three maps, for better location detail (Baja California Sur, Baja California, and Alta California).

The book is glove box friendly at 8.5" x 5.5", so it is easy to have at your service as you travel to the 46 missions reachable by automobile (if you have one able to get to Santa Maria, otherwise 45)! Only two missions have no automobile access... so the book is also backpack friendly!

Approx. 145 pages with approx. 160 photos and maps:

The price of the book is $19.95 + tax (shipping included)... (U.S. and Canada).

Pay Pal is set up, http://oldmissions.com/

or you can send a check for $21.70/copy to:

M & E BOOKS
P.O. BOX 20121
EL CAJON, CA 92021

If you have questions, please email them to us at oldmissions*at*gmail.com (replace the *at* with @ )

Christmas is coming up!

Thank you very much, and I hope you find the book useful and informative as you travel through any or all of the three states that now are part of Spanish California!
Max, Erline, David

Any chance of getting it signed by the authors?
I'll be requesting mine once PayPal is up and running.

Check's in the mail. Really.

David K - 9-8-2012 at 11:08 AM

I am happy to sign all the books purchased by my Nomad amigos... I will just need to get to El Cajon (1 hour from here) before Max mails them out to do so! Thank you for your early orders! Max, a reviewer doing copy-edit (a Nomad), and I have been working on it again this morning, refining the layout and trying to catch any typos...

add: If you purchased a book and then come to one of the Power Point shows, bring it with you to get Max and I to sign them. Otherwise, get the books at one of the shows and we will sign them at that time. I only wish I had a British accent, as I always thought that gave Graham and edge when he does his shows!

Well to have PayPal one needs a website so my webhost is making us one so you can do PayPal. In the meantime mail a check to the P.O. box if you want. Thank you.

David K - 9-9-2012 at 01:07 PM

Okay, we now have a website!

http://oldmissions.com/ or http://www.oldmissions.com

Just up the past hour, under construction but will have a PayPal link there and perhaps have updates for this book and future books... Max has already planned to update his popular 'California's El Camino Real and its Historic Bells' that was published by Sunbelt several years ago.

In the updated version, we will include all of the California El Camino Real that begins in Loreto and perhaps include mission roads south as well as north from Loreto!

Anyway, first we need to finish and sell the new missions book so we can do more books!

Thank you for your interest!

David K - 9-9-2012 at 01:38 PM

I already thought of that... not sure how to price the package as the weight is double, but if you buy from us in person at a power point presentation, I may bring some of Mike's books? These mission books have value, and I have even heard from some of you who have seen it, to not discount, they are worth the time, effort and information they contain... So $20 is fair and it will keep on giving for years.

Mike's book is also valuable as entertainment and information (how to live on the coast of Baja for a summer)... I will discuss it with Max. We are meeting tomorrow to do another proof read of the last edits.

Thank for your suggestion!

PAY PAL IS NOW AVAILABLE

Okay amigos and California history buffs, go to the book's web page: http://oldmissions.com/

The pre-pub price posted includes tax and shipping to a U.S. address. Once the books are printed, then the pre-pub special is over.

Thank you for your support of our project!

We have received orders for about 20 books so far at PayPal and a few sent checks to the P.O. box, so I think it is working okay? If Pay Pal is a hassle please just mail a check, the old fashion way. Thank you very much.

Today Max and I spent some hours on final edits and it is really looking nice... We have more maps and now each locator map (3) has a page facing it with the missions listed on each map. Before, we had the list after the three maps. All to make using the book even easier.

There is a chance we will have a Spanish edition as well, we are seeing about having it translated by someone from the historic center in Baja California.

We will be meeting the governor and other dignitaries for the State of Baja California next week, and they will be presented with our book.

Yes, this is getting exciting... of course a copy is going to Huell Howser, too. My co-author, Max spent an entire 1 hour show with Huell (on the El Camino Real Bells).

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INTEREST and SUPPORT!

David K - 9-17-2012 at 12:22 AM

Thank you very much... Well today (Sunday) spent the afternoon at Max's in El Cajon and wow, the book looks real nice (on the computer)!

I am sharing the details with you because you guys are like family, and in fact you are closer in many ways as we all share such a deep love for Baja and Old California History!

We are doing a run of 30-40 copies tomorrow that will go to Tecate this Wednesday night, where the Governor of Baja California and other State officials will be officially opening CAREM's museum. We will be presenting the governor with his own copy and others to CAREM then.

If I can get a chance to personally meet the governor, I will ask Max to take a photo... Anyway, the good news is this first printing will get a real scrutinizing for appearance, errors, etc. so the next run (your guy's books) will be the best possible... even better than what the governor gets, maybe!!

See more on CAREM here: http://www.carem.org

Thank you!

PS... I just saw this on the CAREM web page:

November, 2012
Book Presentation: The Old Missions of Baja California & Alta California 1697-1834
Presentation of new book by authors Max Kurillo, Erline Tuttle & David Kier. At Miguel Mathes Media Room, CAREM Facilities, Tecate, B.C. Mexico.

Will you ship a signed copy to me in Canada?

Gracias,

David K - 9-19-2012 at 11:51 PM

I will ask Max to find out how much Canada cost to ship to, but I don't think it is too big a deal... and I will happily sign it... okay, eh?

Spiral binding is the main way we are going at this point, as it really is user friendly to keep the book open on a particular page, etc. On the web site, we do mention to let us know if you want perfect binding (typical book style) via email to oldmissions*at*gmail.com. Thank you for the order!

Last night was a special moment for us launching the book by meeting and presenting a copy to the governor of Baja California. See him holding a spiral bound copy:

David K - 9-20-2012 at 09:21 AM

I believe she is the assistant to the governor... part of the advance team who told Max and I where to stand and how the governor would be meeting us... just a minute or two before he got to the building we are in front of.

iTunes? Isn't that a song thing? Do you want to hear 'When the Swallows Return to Capistrano" (only mission song I can think of this late)?

If this book does well, then it will launch us into new projects... we have ideas that are Baja & Alta and History related.

I want very bad for you guys to have something you will keep in your glove box and realize both Baja and Alta California has these treasure from the past scattered all over the place! With some knowledge as to what they were or when they were, it brings a whole new dimension to traveling in the Californias! :light:

Hi Jose, yes today is the last day to order online for the special. Any P O. Box orders must be postmarked in Sept. Thank you!

We hope to offer a Spanish language edition in the near future.

BAJACAT - 9-30-2012 at 01:09 PM

yes that would be nice. There is not alt books about missions in Spanish..

David K - 9-30-2012 at 01:29 PM

Right and sadly the information is less than accurate. The recent INAH sponsored, big, folding book on the missions and Camino Real was so full of errors it helped motivate me to publish an accurate history on the true missions and their dates. The INAH book was in both languages and we did include it in the reference list.

Just a note, more books mailed today... and the first were mailed late on Friday, so probably didn't get far until Saturday... Things must move on Sunday because today (Monday), a book customer in FLORIDA got his! Another in Northern California just emailed me that his also arrived.

I hope the book is useful to understand the how and why of all 48 California Missions and it adds to the interest and motivates further research or visits to the sites on both sides of the border!

Thank you!

Great to hear the mail comes through! That's one government program that works... although way too expensive!

desertcpl - 10-2-2012 at 08:17 AM

got mine yesterday and autographed

David K - 10-2-2012 at 08:22 AM

Cool... yes, everyone who helped us by ordering in September got all three author's signed copies... I have about a dozen left with all three... After that, bring your book to our Power Point shows or get one from us in person, there.

I am happy to sign any by request... once these I still have are gone, just ask!

David K - 10-2-2012 at 10:07 AM

On our Facebook page, I just added the COLOR images of the flags and coat of arms for Spain and Mexico and the Catholic Orders during the California mission period... some are in the book, but not in color.

See them at http://facebook.com/oldmissions

liknbaja127 - 10-2-2012 at 07:26 PM

Just got my 2 books, thank you for signing them. Looks like a great book.

David K - 10-3-2012 at 07:45 AM

Good to hear how quickly they arrived. If anyone has not received their book, email us at the book email address: oldmissions*at*gmail.com

Udo - 10-3-2012 at 09:13 AM

It just arrived a couple of days ago.

I'll keep it in the car for a while so I can bring it by David's for a personal autograph and inscription, next time I'm near his house.

(If it's OK with DK)

David K - 10-3-2012 at 07:05 PM

Take a look inside... every early order has all three signatures.

David K - 10-3-2012 at 07:06 PM

I am happy to personalize it to you Udo.

What's New?

David K - 10-4-2012 at 03:45 PM

As of today, Discover Baja Travel Club is selling our new book! Members typically get a discount, and anyone can go there and buy their books and maps...

So, if you haven't yet ordered one or want to avoid the mailing charge and are in San Diego County, go over to Discover Baja (in the Sprouts shopping center on Governor Drive, just east of R e g e n t s Rd. (north of Hwy. 52, between I-5 & 805).

Remember that this book covers ALL the California missions, not just Baja!

Mission #20 (the one founded right after San Diego de Alcalá) is in Carmel, near Monterey Bay...

Udo - 10-4-2012 at 04:13 PM

Guess what???

I looked inside, and all three signatures were on the second page.
Thanks, David, Erline and Max!

We've read countless mission books, have more than a few, but yours is like an old friend - something you enjoy sitting down with, in a comfortable chair and a glass of wine (L A Cetto I must admit).

I appreciate the kind words and signatures of the three of you.

Nice work, made easier when it is also a passion.

Thank you!

David K - 10-20-2012 at 12:53 AM

IF anyone who has ordered a book did not get it, please let me know via u2u or email to the book's email oldmissions*AT*gmail.com Those who were in on the pre-publication special all had their books mailed out by Oct. 1, and should have received them that first week in October. Books were mailed First Class with tracking. Those orders received after Oct. 1 had their books mailed once I got notified by PayPal that the check was received.

Thank you... and it would be great to hear from you who have had a chance to scan through or read it!

I still have a few of the limited copies with all three author signatures... Once they are gone, you will need to come to a book signing to get Max's autograph... mine?, heck, just ask and I will add it to any I mail out from here.

Thank you very much!

Thank you David! Your book arrived today. So much for a government run delivery service ours and yours.

The book is very well done and we will use it to find the ones we missed earlier this year. It is resource we will keep handy for a long time.

Thanks again You and your coauthors should be very proud.

Oh, you are welcome! I am sorry that even with NAFTA and a common language, that a 1st class package takes so long to get into Canada. All U.S. orders are typically received within 3 days. Please go to our Facebook page and see more mission photos and facts, plus updates, news, etc. http://facebook.com/oldmissions

We have a revised edition being printed this week to have for sale at the Discover Baja Fiesta this Saturday afternoon. Other than an edit or two, the revision is only on mission #48 (Guadalupe) where we have the first photos of the actual mission building foundation, unearthed since our last time there... No other mission book has photos of the actual mission remains of Guadalupe. The photos have previously only showed some walls and ruins from the army post that occupied the site for many years in the 20th Century. It was believed that nothing remained of the last California mission (1834-1840).

I will share the revised page so that all of you can see it, after I get them from Max this Saturday.

David K - 11-30-2012 at 06:56 PM

A Revised Edition (new photos at Guadalupe mission) will be for sale from 2-5 pm at Discover Baja Travel Club's Fiesta on Saturday, Dec. 1.

I will post the updated Guadalupe pages on our Facebook page, after the Fiesta so anyone with the earlier editions can update: http://facebook.com/oldmissions
