Amazing how little they've grown too, in 40 years. I have a feeling some of the plants down there are a lot older than we think.

that's why off roading is so destructive to desert. takes decades, even centuries to heal the destruction of vegetation and soil.

Nope... the term 'off-roading' means off PAVED roads... there is no cross-country racing, as that would be ridiculously slow compared to using the
existing dirt roads.
In fact, it is the building of PAVED roads, like Hwy. 1 that DESTROYS millions of plants and kills or displaces creatures. The number of cardon and
cirio (boojums) killed in 1973 is beyond reasonable as the dozers not only cleared the roadbed, but several hundred feet on each side.
Unimproved Dirt roads, such as those used by SCORE and CODE are plant and animal friendly. Even the graded roads don't clear cut a wide path across
the desert the same way Hwy. 1 did. |
