1967 to 2012 at the same spot in Baja (1966, and 1973 pics added)

Those photos I took at the 'lost mission' in 2009 and compared them to the same spot with photos taken in 1966 was really fun to see...

Well, here is me in 1967 at the Arroyo Calamajue viewpoint at the mill ruins (I was almost 10)...

Then me in 2012 (almost 55)... :o:spingrin:

Amazing how little they've grown too, in 40 years. I have a feeling some of the plants down there are a lot older than we think.

that's why off roading is so destructive to desert. takes decades, even centuries to heal the destruction of vegetation and soil.

Nope... the term 'off-roading' means off PAVED roads... there is no cross-country racing, as that would be ridiculously slow compared to using the existing dirt roads.

In fact, it is the building of PAVED roads, like Hwy. 1 that DESTROYS millions of plants and kills or displaces creatures. The number of cardon and cirio (boojums) killed in 1973 is beyond reasonable as the dozers not only cleared the roadbed, but several hundred feet on each side.

Unimproved Dirt roads, such as those used by SCORE and CODE are plant and animal friendly. Even the graded roads don't clear cut a wide path across the desert the same way Hwy. 1 did.

Point taken, however I have seen wide swaths of terrain wiped out by racers that didn't stay on the roads...the valley behind Punta Blanca looked like a war zone in the late 90s. But by and large the racers do stick to the roads.

Wish I'd had a few semis back in the early 70s when they were carving the road---I'd have been hauling the Boojums and Cardon back up here! :lol:

David, just thinking with all your photos old and new, it would be interesting to see if any botanists would want to pour over them to analyze plant ages----I remember Humphrey was doing a little of that in his Boojum book.

The highway roadbed was under construction... this is the view point El Portezuelo/ the peninsular divide... I can't find the photo a Nomad took at this point recently to compare the two... but I did post them together once... That's my mom...
