Which is better?

Got a suggestion that Lopez Mateos is better than San Carlos for lodging and whales. How about some opinions? We know jrbaja likes San Carlos.:?:

Laguna San Ignacio

is another thought. It's a little longer drive, but you can stay at Ricardo's Rice and Beans and he can make reservatrions for the next day with the whale watching folks. The drive to the lagune is an hour or more over graded dirt. You can include a ride to the whale place if you don't want to take your own car. If you need more info let me know. A story about our last trip there is on Fred's board under Travelers' Reports, Mike Humfreville, March 14, 2003. Enjoy your trip and let us know what you decided.

I prefer Laguna San Ignacio. But, not driving from La Paz.
San Carlos has better accomodations (Hotel Brennan) and a couple others as well as restaurants rather than stands.
I hear there are motels in Lopez Mateos although I haven't noticed any.
Proximity to whales sounds like less of a trip from Lopez Mateos but either way, the boat ride will be fun depending on the weather.

For this trip I think San Ignacio is a little too far. So, we'll stick with our original plans. We've heard good about Alcatraz Hotel , as well as the Brennan in San Carlos.

We've made a couple of whale watch trips to Magdalena Bay from La Paz, Annie. You are going to have so much fun! We generally rent a car rather than go with a group out of La Paz. Used to be able to get all the way to San Carlos by bus; not certain if that still holds true.

Our favorite panguero in San Carlos is Martin Flores (accent i). He always has a big smile and loves his work, enjoying the whales, dolphis and birds, and also enjoying his passengers and their reactions. We were out for about 5 hours each time, much longer tha the tour groups. Once you get into town, ask anyone and they'll either take you to him or bring him to you. And if you do see Martin, please say hello from Natalia y Esteban.
