Dipping Pool ready for action!

shari - 9-16-2012 at 09:57 AM

many of you remember the big hole we had in our patio for so many years and how we dreamt of having a little pool/big tub there. Well last night we inaugurated our new tub and it was amazing watching the stars, the waves roll in and cooling off in it before bed.

Juan has yet to put the laja rock on the outside but there she is...another dream realized! All I wanted was a claw footed tub but I admit, I like Juan's version of that much better!

WOW, that is so cool, Shari (little play on words, there).

Juan is truly a talented guy!!!!

Excellent... not only do you offer a room with a view, but also a pool with a view!

DENNIS - 9-16-2012 at 10:28 AM

The structure brings back memories of around 45 years back on a river trip inland from San Blas. At the head of the river the crystal clear water pooled in a basin.......the bottom strewn with beer cans.
On shore was a concrete tub, similar in design to yours, Shari, crawling with baby aligators from the river. Local kids were swimming in the water, unafraid.

I remember inaugurating our new hot tub also.
You're right, it can be AMAZING :lol:

Looks Great! What a cool place to sip Tecates and listen to the waves!

shari - 9-16-2012 at 12:19 PM

Many rancherias have this kind of a "tina" or tub for cooling off in....I first saw one in San Ignacio and thought...what a great idea! I just got out from a wee dip...it's so nice to just strip, go one step and jump in!

Dennis,

I was on that same river trip in December 1967. I have old slides from that trip up the river.
My travelling buddy climbed up a tree, on the far side of the pool, held on to the tail of an iguana and they both fell into the water! I must get off of my burro and digitize those slides!

I too remember the gators there and at Torino's bar!

Ateo - 9-16-2012 at 01:07 PM

way bad azz. stoked.

Yeah...that place was dark. I was resting my arm over the short wall...or fence that housed the tropical , running water scene and some guy at the bar told me to look out, pointing near my arm. There was a teenage gator right there. I could hardly see him.
I guess he wasn't all that hungry at the moment.

Bigboy-- I was there in Dec. 1967 too!!! Christmas vacation from Palomar College, went with Eric, his family and Steve M.
And since we don`t want to hijack this thread, the dipping looks so inviting, and ready for action!! A great idea and addition!! Congrats!

bigboy - 9-16-2012 at 08:32 PM

BornFisher,

I love the new dipping pool that Shari and Juan have built. Next week, the wife and I will be visiting Shari and Juan for a few days. I'm sure Shari will have us over for a dip in the pool!

I visited San Blas three times, first in December 1967, December 1968 and again in August 1968. On my first trip I met three guys from San Diego State and I'm still good friends with one of them. His name is Jack and he and his wife live in Encinitas. Great times back then on the mainland but now I spend most of my retirement vacation time in Baja.

There's a way that's virtually free. :o

shari - 9-17-2012 at 09:15 AM

we would like to heat it in the winter...we are reviewing several options...like black ABS piping like a big radiator on the cliffside...I'm open to the not too costly ideas....so let's hear them!

Younger son heats his eight or ten person spa in Pacific Beach climate with this four by eight black rubber thing (looks like a mat) that has a whole bunch of individual tubes like a car radiator.

Spa will get too hot, over 112 so must take cover off or add cold water. Normal 60's and 70's days heats to 104-108 which is good for their purposes.

Must be positioned properly to allow convection to move the hot and cooler water around or you will have to use a pump.

He tried everything including copper pipe in a compost heap (works good, too much maintenance) and this seems to be the best. Should see him this week will ask about it.

My personal opinion:

A small solar water heater would work just fine. You won't be heating a lot os water.

I CAN"T WAIT!!!

BajaGringo - 9-17-2012 at 06:24 PM

That is so cool Shari! Do you fill it with fresh water or sea water???

shari - 9-18-2012 at 09:04 AM

it has fresh water Ron....I dip several times a day just to cool off...it's great not having to climb down the rock cliff to get to the sea and right now there is too much dead seaweed mucking up the little beach at our house so the albercita is the ticket on these hot days....last night star gazing and milky way dreaming was amazing floating in the pool!

capt. mike - 9-18-2012 at 12:56 PM

the plastic or rubber mats with hollow ribs are no good. UV eats them up in no time.
you need a small 12 v. circ pump, T stat and evacuated glass tube collectors. in your case one collector panel will be ok.
if you want hot water in the night you need a storage pit which can be rock lined in-line with the system. It will thermally store your nite needs.

Juan could do all this. Buy stuff at Silicon Solar or solar panels plus and they have all the accessories and designs.

Got in touch with my son and what you describe capt. mike as the rubber mat with hollow ribs is what he has.

He bought them used off of Craigslist (don't know how old) for $40 each and has not had a problem with them in the three years they've been up. (has two for the larger spa).

BajaBlanca - 9-18-2012 at 03:38 PM

Shari - your dipping pool is perfect for this abnormal heat wave we are having .... so wonderful that you can star gaze !!

no argument here

i am just saying in Az they do not last. i guess if you bought them cheap and you got a few years - ok for you. I just wouldn't have them for my place. there are other better but yes a bit more costly options.

the UV here eats all things plastic and rubber exposed year round.

Bob H - 9-20-2012 at 07:18 PM

Shari, just saw your dipping pool thread for the first time. How nice is that? Wow....

Can you take another photo with a person standing there, or something that would reference the size. It's hard to tell it's size.

And, it looks like you picked a very nice spot for this!

mcfez - 10-8-2012 at 02:54 PM

What a great spot for it. Will you build us one ;)

rts551 - 10-8-2012 at 03:34 PM

so how do you keep it clean? pump and filter? don't imagine many spa chemicals available in Asuncion. or do you drain and refill?

shari - 10-8-2012 at 03:40 PM

we have been in the pisinita..little pool ALOT lately with all this hot weather...my favorite time is before bed for star gazing...it's right under the milky way! Here is Sirena & Izaak enjoying a dip yesterday. And Baja Fam kiddies partying down in the pool!

Feathers - 10-8-2012 at 04:06 PM
