Who is a proud owner of a new Nikon D800?

CortezBlue - 9-18-2012 at 05:40 PM

I got my New D800 a few months ago and really love it. The picture quality at high iso (6400) is beyond any past Nikon I have owned.

Curious if any other Nomads have had a chance to shoot a D800

wessongroup - 9-18-2012 at 06:08 PM

Put a couple up, as I don't plan on upgrading at this time D5000 ...

Anything would be nice :):) his name in Bob

Nope don't know a thing about your camera. I have a D60 I put away after I purchased the P510. It has a good zoom and does an OK movie too. And small enough to carry around all day. I just carry an extra battery.
Sorry about jacking this thread but I really like the P510.
edit: Definitely not a professional camera though.

Just read up on the D800 after your post. One must be ready to drop at least $3-grand or more to get into this camera setup. I'm sure it takes wonderful images, etc.

Skipjack Joe - 9-18-2012 at 11:29 PM

Please post some images (preferably landscapes) taken with your new camera. I would like to see the quality.

Marinero - 9-19-2012 at 06:09 AM

I recently bought a Nikon P7100. Fixed lens, but 28 to 200mm zoom and varies from full auto to setting Iso, shutter speed and apature. Also has many menu features for tweaking your shots. I am not a great photog, but this camera takes exceptional pics.

Yes, it is pricey, but the worst part is, I came from the D300 and the D5100 DX format, so I had to buy all new FX lenses. I am a fast glass nut, so I had a 70-200 2.8 and a 50 1.4. I have sense bought a 28 2.8 an 85 1.8 and an all around 28 to 300 zoom. I was able to sell all of my other gear to offset the cost. I will post some shots as soon as I get some time.

We are on the same page but with different brands. I have been a Canon guy for about 50 years and I have a lot invested in really good Canon lenses...the "L" jobbies made for professionals which I ain't....kinda advance amateur. My new camera is a Canon EOS 5D MKIII which is a lot like you D800...I think....full frame, ISO up to 12800, internal HDR etc. etc. I took it to the Huntington Library last month and shot the art work in there....dark...with available light at ISO3200 and there is NO Graininess! Wow. The tech is getting better all the time.

Congrats on your new camera. It's fun having these gizmos...so much fun that I have three of them but the all ain't a 5D! :-)

BTW..my main use for one of the others....a Canon EOS 7D.....is to shoot birds in flight in Baja...mostly at Gonzaga Bay. The 7D is a 60% crop camera so my Canon 100-400 L lens thinks it's a 160 to 640 MM lens when it's on the 7D. That kind of range and the 10 frames per second the thing shoots at captures the birds in flight superbly...can see their eyeballs looking at you. I usually shoot at ISO 400 and 1/2500 sec. to get those shots. I love these things!...and the birds too!

Nice shot and post-pro work. The Casita really pops.

CortezBlue - 9-19-2012 at 07:01 PM

You have a good eye my friend

A little Gaussian blur layer, and then a slight removal on the plane of the casita

CortezBlue - 9-19-2012 at 07:04 PM

PS I printed a 20x30 at Costco just to see how it looked. Amazingly crisp from the 36mp file.

WOW...3000 bucks, without glass, and you still need PS.

Jes kiddin'.

What convinced you to watermark? Were you ripped off in the past?

CortezBlue - 9-20-2012 at 07:03 AM

Actually I use Capture NX 2 more often, I prefer NX2's raw conversion over Adobe.

But, if I would take the time to use it, there is nearly a version of Photoshop built into the D800.

The sad thing is I normally shoot in manual mode and never really use any of the built in tools. However, I have created my own Sepia mix that I have named Mexico Sepia that I use for my Mission and church photos. When I am working in my camera, NX2 or photoshop, I can simple click this sepia mix and all of my photos can match. Works great for gallery groupings

tripledigitken - 9-20-2012 at 11:38 AM

It's a fine camera, but having just decided last year to go with the D7000 over the D700, I'm taking a pass on a full frame sensor (FX) DSLR.

My next camera will be a FX mirrorless, which aren't too far out on the horizon.

Yes, the D7K is getting great reviews. I had a D300 and bought a D5100 for a travel body, just before the 7K was released. As I always tell everyone, it is not the camera but the photographer. But many of the newer cameras sure make it a ton easier to take some great natural light photos.

Wow, you are realy in to photography! Big time.... What in the world do you do with your older equipment when you constantly upgrade.

I just received my camera, the 800E. I had been in the Canon family for over 30 years so it was a tough decision to jump ship. I was way overdue for an upgrade in my SLR cache. I am stoked with the images I've captured thus far and I look forward to many years of print making with the full sized sensor.

Cool
I originally ordered the E as most of my work is landscaping, but have been getting into portrait work. I don't know if you have read the reviews, but your new E is about as close to a med format camera there is.

However, I am more stoked that you changed to Nikon! That's like my dad buying a ford in the 60's.

Congrats

Stimbo,

Big move to switch over to the "dark side". I think you will enjoy Nikkor lenses too. The 24-70 F2.8 and the 70-200 F2.8 are my two favorites. You will, of course, still shoot your large format, right?

CortezBlue - 9-21-2012 at 12:22 PM

I just picked up the new 28-300 Nikon zoom.

It is not fast glass, but a great travel VR lens. Essentially it is an FX version of the DX 18-200. It is what I used on the above BW photo

CortezBlue - 9-21-2012 at 12:36 PM

Some great info on the D800 and D600 rankings

Thanks Ken and Cortez -- It wasn't an easy decision.... I was choosing between the 5D MIII and the 800E, both great cameras but in the end, it was not only the full sized sensor, the pixel count, built-in flash, but the Nikon was cheaper. As I'm primarily a landscape shooter, the 800 fit my needs better. I would have had to buy new glass with the Canon anyways, so that was a wash in the decision.

I will continue to shoot my 4x5 until Fuji pulls the plug on manufacturing film. That could be anytime..... But I'm liking the idea of stitching photos together with the Nikon in Photoshop or Lightroom to "simulate" large format quality. There is no two ways about it, with a SLR, you can be WAY more productive.

Anyway, I'm stoked.

Jim

Hmm, by your quote below, I see you are a "Breakfast of Champions" fan??

Thanks for the kind words, however, like anything, as soon as you think you have things figured out, you don't!!

But I will keep working on it

RIP Mr. and Mrs. Rowell. This month's Outdoor Photographer did an anniversary of their untimely death this latest issue. Ten years back, if I remember correctly.
He was great.

I'm in this camera forum. Covers just about every camera made, the guys who post there are really helpful. If you get time it's:
http://forums.steves-digicams.com/nikon-dslr-57/
go to forums and look for your camera.
Oh, forgot they're all digital....never mind.

Oh yeh, I think I've read all of Kurt's books. "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse" was a fav.

LOVE that Black and White---really stunning, love your quote about figuring things out --- and while I love them all, my favorite Kurt books, I think were Piano Player and Galapagos.
