When is the best month to see whales in Laguna San Ignacio?

BajaVida - 10-23-2004 at 05:49 PM

need to go sometime and want to be there during prime time

We went this year to San Ignacio after numerous trips to Scammon's. We were there on the 22nd of March and got to pet a whale. Most of the whales at that time were mothers with calves, most but not all of the bulls had left. We are already planning another trip this year.

Can't wait!!!

it is surprising

that Baja Vida did not ask what was the best bait to use to catch a whale....
he's that kind of guy!

I visited all 4 major whale watching areas last Febuary(2004) except for San Carlos there were plenty of whales at GN,LSI and especially at Puerto Lopez Mateos,I know everyone thinks that the only friendlys are at San Ignacio Lagoon but my experience at PLM was just perfect, let me list why I think PLM is the best place to view whales:
1.paved road
2.secure parking
3.free camping
4.5 or 6 very good restaurants
5.clean bathrooms
6.dock to board panga
7.see the whales from shore
8.5 min. boat ride to whales
9.dolphin and bird watching included
10.about a 4 hour tour
11.less cost per person/per boat

4 sets of mother/calfs would take turns letting us pet the calfs, somtimes for 10 min.at a time, they just kept staying around the boat...good luck and enjoy

We have had PLM on our list of places to go. Maybe this year.
Thanks for the info!

elgatoloco,i don't thik you will be dissapointed...When the wind is blowing at GN, so you drive all the way out to LSI and it's windy out there, you are stuck out there...it seems that long (35 mile long) barrier island blocks the wind at Puerto Lopez Mateos...I found out you can bring your camping gear and these panga owners will thak you to primo camping spots on the isla and bring you water and food when you want or need it...and you can hear the whales all night long while camping ...too cool

Mag Bay at nite

Spent a week camped on that island.
The big "whoosh" sounds at night, just a few feet from your tent, AWESOME!!!
Need to go back and reprise a great experience soon.

Baja Arriba!!
