Ensenada Veterinarian- a question...

Feathers - 9-26-2012 at 12:04 PM

Hi Nomads...

Is anyone here familiar with a Veterinarian in Ensenada named Dr. Maria Luz Hernandez Villela or more commonly Dr. Beba?

Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

My first question is "Does she speak English?" followed by
"Is she still practicing in Ensenada?"

It's not important if she does or doesn't speak English, but I would like to know. I have a great translator (and friend!) who can handle any language barrier.

A message was left on her voicemail yesterday, but we haven't heard back yet.

I'm looking for an experienced small animal surgical vet. The closer to La Bocana, the better!

If you happen have a recommendation for or experience with another Veterinarian in Baja, please let me know.

Muchas gracias in advance!!!

That's arguable, but why is he the best? How do you make the comparison....or do you?
There should be a forum here for the Best of everything...doctors, lawyers, vets....you name it because it seems there are a lot of bests.

Never heard of, nor seen a reference to her. Doesn't mean she isn't out there, but if she is, she's not yet developed a fan base.

There are others that will do what you're looking for. Stay tuned here for more recommendations.

Thanks, Terry.
I was just looking for this info.
By and large...this vets name comes up way more than any other when talking about Ensenada vets.
I don't know if he's the "BEST", but he seems to be popular.

Hi Dennis! I found the information about Dr. Beba in this article. She sounds promising in experience:

Thank you for responding, Mula. The farthest South I'd like to go is Mulege. If I never have to drive through CD Mordida-Constitucion again, it will be too soon.

Thank you bajaguy! I'll give Dr Pena a call and let you know if he'll "take the case", so to speak.

I know a few people who took their pets (dogs) to him for the ortho surgery. They are very satisfied and the dogs run and climb like puppies. We also use him for general vet services for our two Labs and our cat. We highly recommend him, and his staff.

I would avoid her just because her recommendation comes from that site.
Oh well...let us know how it goes.

I hear you, Dennis. I'm hoping to get more info about a Vet from Santa Rosalia, too... which is much closer to us than Ensenada.

The situation isn't an emergency, but darn close as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you for your input and advice.

Mulegena - 9-26-2012 at 04:10 PM

Isabeau the osprey needs a veterinarian who is an avian specialist and who is qualified to manage the anesthesia. This is the single-most critical element in treating her fracture, managing the anesthesia which in a bird has critically narrow margins. Avian surgery is a matter quite apart from mammalian surgery.

Dr. Manuel Cota in Sta. Rosalia is a decent veterinarian but he is no avian surgical specialist. I've known him personally and worked with him in his office for several years. He is not experienced nor has the surgical or anesthetic equipment to handle the bird's medical needs. This is why I did not take her to him this summer when she was in my care.

Here are avian medical specialists in San Diego. The use of the volunteer veterinary clinic in Mulege can be arranged for their use if they would agree to travel here to provide care for her.

Dr. Todd Cecil is one. http://www.pescsandiego.com/ourStaff5.php also might want to check the raptor rescue center on Highland Valley Rd (Ramona>;) http://www.skyhunters.org/home.html (this doesn't quite look right--http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2011/jan/22/bird-watchers-keep-eagle-eye-out-raptors/

It is good to finally know through this thread that Isabeau made the trip to La Bocana from Mulege last week. Please let me know if I can help in any further way with the osprey's care. I love her dearly and want what's best for her.
Sincerely, Maria/Mulegena

She has a practice near the Nissan dealership. Speaks very good English and has organized many continuing education seminars for Ensenada veterinarians bringing down US veterinarians to present the seminars. She has been active in spay/neuter clinics for many years. To my knowledge has never sought publicity for her work. A true asset to the veterinary profession in Mexico!
Her husband has been ill so she may be more difficult to contact than usual.

Would have helped if in the beginning you had stated you were looking for an 'avian' specialist.

Why? There are no Avian Specialists is Baja California... unless, (after countless hours of research, telephone calls and emails) you know something I don't?

Thank you so much, bajadreamer. I couldn't ask for a higher recommendation than from a fellow Veterinarian.

Dr. Beba called me last night and we discussed the situation at great length. What a wonderful, caring woman!

She'll be making some inquiries today and will call me back this evening. I'm upgrading my mood from "guardedly optimistic" to hopeful:)

If you knew already there were no avian specialists in Baja, why did you put the question out there to begin with?

Taking a bird to the dog and cat vet? Wow!

Actually there is an exotic animal specialist in LaPaz.

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the expression "Desperate times call for desperate measures."? You're certainly ignorant of my intentions.

I'm not "taking the bird" anywhere, as of yet... and I will not justify my actions to you or Lisa-Marie. End of story.
