The Vizcaino-Tortugas Road

DianaT - 9-28-2012 at 10:52 AM

Shared with permission from Kenyi Ogawa in Bahia Asuncion.

Repair work is sooooooo slow. As of a couple of weeks ago, they had torn up about 3 to 4 miles and it was very nice gravel that turned washboardy rather quickly. But it is better than what was there --- still a long ways with ever growing craters. From the last tomato field in Vizcaino, take it slow, or do like this picture suggests. :-)

Thanks for the update, Diana!

We will be in BA December 15-22. We'll drop by for a "HOLA".

We drove that road just a couple of days ago. Just when I thought the potholes were behind us more would hit us head on.

That is the really dangerous thing --- several places it is clear and one becomes a bit complacent, and bam---more moon craters that just keep growing.

Work had stopped a couple of weeks ago --- are they working again?

We hope so.

I worked it out to set my cruise control on minimum speed 35 mph on those sections that go a half mile or more between nests of holes. That way I don't unconsciously drift up to 50 or more. The landscape is so flat it woos a driver to keep adding speed until "AWJESUSCHRISTSONOFAb-tch!" W-H-A-M....!!!!!!

I poise my foot over the brake pedal. Certain lighting patterns created during the day offer better or worse highlighting of the craters. Late afternoon with sun in eyes, or driving by headlights is the worst for me.

It makes a person glad to see the BAHIA ASUNCION sign :smug:

Baja is "interesting" with it's roads.

I found out how Jesus Maria got it's name, last 'couple of times down. Their last Tope is way past whre the town ends and is the same color as the road.
Just as you start to pick up speed...there it is. My head hit the overhead and I heard the wife's ......Jesus Maria! when we got down again.

Scrouse, did you read your U2U's ?

Drove it yesterday...I would say it is a bit better than it has been....it appeared that maybe the workers were working on the road to Tortugas past the BA turn off.
