Boat parking in secure parking lot and dogs no problem at the Mariana Hotel in Mazatlan.

Room rates are $30 USD and up for a double.

We got an apartment for 10 days for 5,000 pesos.

You will enjoy the winter warmth of the San Franciso area. We did all our trips by rv so can't comment of overnight stays except that "notel motels" have been good for some folks, even the older crowd, and very secure.

Temporary Importation can be had near Caborca, within 12 km if you need it. The aduana 26 km southeast of Sonoyta has been closed, is the latest we've heard.

Wow, has it been that long David? Amazing....... I could have sworn it was not so, but... time flies!

My bald spot has grown significantly since then... and my accumulation of grey hair... what the heck!

It will take me awhile but we will figure ways to get back to BOLA a little more often once we are settled.
So much Mexico to explore!


If Sonora is like Baja, they want you to get tourist cards at the border and not part way to the 'forbidden zone', if they did close it... perhaps?

I didn't have grey hair until my kids became teenagers! Of course I was already in my mid 40's then! The last time I stayed at Gecko was New Years 2005... the next year Doc closed the camping and cabin rentals part of Gecko... Miss the association with Nomads there... but it was a good move for Doc, naturally.

we used notels too and they were, for the most part, perfectly clean and good. Maybe check out the room to see first (they allow this) and then commit. Also, it is really important to let them know you want it for 24 hours or overnight, right up front. Some allow and some don't.

Now, normally one parks in a garage and closes the door for privacy - will your aluminum boat be behind you ???? I am not sure there will be sufficient room for you to part in these notels ...

The closure at km 26 was very recent, and noted on RV.Net's Mexico and South America forum. That place was not the greatest especially if you were going north, nothing on that side of the road. Last time through we were made to drive farther north, turn around (we were towing) and proceed as though we were heading south to get "processed." In other years DW had to cross the road amid the traffic coming down the hill. The place was definately a stop-gap measure but lasted nearly eight years.

That is odd because there has been some construction going on lately at that site.
